A few minutes later the young man, who was a short distance from Mr. McGill, turned around and saw him in a stooping position and going to his assistance thought that he had fainted. He ran into the house and summoned his father, who went out at once, but Mr. McGill, who was then unconscious gasped only a couple of times and expired. His death was due to heart trouble with which he had long been afflicted, being close to death's door a number of times before. Reg., and soon after the close of the war came to Stevens Point and had since worked at his trade as a carpenter. One daughter, Mrs. B. V. (Nellie) Martin, died about seven years ago, and besides his wife he leaves two step-daughters, Alice Tupper Estes, who resides near Fairhaven, Wash., and a step-son, J. Henry Tupper, also a resident of the latter state. He also leaves one sister, Miss Annie McGill at Ogdensburg, N.Y. Mr. and Mrs. McGill returned from Washington last fall, after living there about six years. He was a good citizen, courteous and gentlemanly, andmany friends will be pained to learn of his sudden death. The funeral, it is expected, will take place from the residence of Mr. Vaughn at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon. James's wife Elizabeth is buried at Forest Cemetery, Stevens Point, Portage County, Wisc., and her Find A Grave memorial is

Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky, Ohio), but Ron Davidson, Special Collections Librarian at Sandusky Library writes: "We have a transcribed index of deaths at the Ohio Veterans Home from 1889 to 1983; however, the person you are asking about does not appear to be listed. The nearest match is for a John McMahon, who died at the home on March 2, 1922, aged 78. He was buried in what is believed to be Nevada, Ohio. (The beginning of the word was apparently illegible, but there is a village in Wyandot County with that name.) There is a J. J. McMahan listed, but he died in 1956, and a James McMahan who died in 1945. I am afraid I can’t explain the discrepancy between your information

Poisoning Developed. William Hughes, who was arrested last week on a charge of assault in the first degree committed upon James McQueen, now faces a charge of murder in the first degree, his alleged victim having died last night. Hughes, it is alleged, in a fight with McQueen struck the latter on the head with a brick, inflicting a wound which proved fatal. The fight occurred May 21 on Scotch Hill, in the southern part of the city. McQueen and Hughes, it is alleged, quarreled and clinched. Several blows were exchanged. McQueen, it is said, bit Hughes' hand. Hughes, it is alleged, picked up the brick and threw it at McQueen, striking him on the head. McQueen was taken home. He grew worse until last week, when blood poisoning developed. Arrested For Assault. Detective Manning and Special Officer Lawrenson arrested Hughes Thursday on a charge of assault in the first degree. He was later released on bail. Coroner DeFreest took McQueen's ante-mortem statement Friday. Yesterday Captain McGrath of the First Precinct was notified by Dr. Love, who was attending McQueen, that the latter could live but a few hours, and Hughes was immediately rearrested. Coroner DeFreest will make an investiga-tion and will hold an inquest. In Police Court. Hughes was arraigned in Police Court this morning before Judge Doherty. He pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder in the first degree. He was represented by James M. Ryan as counsel. Mr. Ryan stated that two brothers of the dead man, William and [Thomas] McQueen, had been arrested on a charge of assault in the first degree preferred by the prisoner. He said that May 30 the McQueen brothers attacked

Inquest in the McQueen Case Commenced Yesterday by Coroner DeFreest – Due to Erysipelas. Coroner DeFreest yesterday afternoon began the inquest touching the case of James McQueen, whose death it is alleged was caused by a blow from a brick thrown by William Hughes. It is alleged that a quarrel took place between the men May 21, during which McQueen bit Hughes on the hand. Hughes, it is alleged, picked up a brick and threw itat McQueen, striking him on the back ofthe head, inflicting a wound which later developed blood poisoning and death. Attorney James M. Ryan appeared forHughes, but inasmuch as the inquest is not a trial the Coroner would not permit cross-questioning by Mr. Ryan. Israel Mead, a rather sportive old veteran of the civil war, who lives on Harrington hill and drives a spirited young horse, came to the village Tuesday afternoon on pleasure bent. but Collector Alfred Stone found diffi-culty in going about it Saturday. In the extreme process of collecting a relaid school tax from Israel Mead, of South Warrensburgh, his pulse went up in the air before he got through with the under-taking in this instance. 'General' Mead is a well known person-age in these parts. He is a veteran of the civil war and any G.A.R. gathering would have a lonesome feeling without him. In health and contentment "the general" lives on the edge of Harrington hill – How blest is he whose wish and care A few paternal acres found. Content to breathe his native air On his own ground. The above in connection with horse, cows, poultry and a pension keeps Mr. Mead in independence, free from want or care. It is his custom to come to the village several times a week – he owns one of the best horses in town. Collector Stone had spoken to Mr. Mead a number of times of late about paying his taxes, a matter of $9.44, three years school tax relaid on the town. A pension-er is not exempt from school taxes, but the collector was given to understand that his occupation was gone as far as getting the above amount was concerned. Coming to the conclusion that it was going to be a chase for his money, Mr. Stone took Jack Murphy in with him Saturday and started for Harrington hill and the home of Mr. Mead. "The general'' was at home but refused to talk business – he did not propose to pay the $9.44 and defied the authority of the collector to get it. Mr. Stone thereupon began to look around for loose property. He had not far to look.

A barnyard scene! On one side stretches the winter landscape, bleak and bare. Everything around so still and quiet looking. Not a leaf stirred. Within the yard enclosure a number of cows are silently ruminating, perhaps of pastures green, chewing the reflective cud. But the semblance of things changed when Mr. Stone suggested that in lieu of $9.44 he proposed to take a cow! At this "the general" drew himself up with a flourish and threatened to shoot before be would allow a cow of his to leave the premises. Seeing that the time for argument was up Mr. Stone proceeded to halter one of the cows and had finished the job just as Mr. Mead appeared flourishing a forty-four Smith & Wesson. The logic of how best to bring matters to a focus now stood Mr. Stone in hand. To face a "forty-four" is a nerve tester and the collector did not propose to be a mark, so he proceeded to disarm 'the general.' During this brief interval Jack Murphy was leading the cow toward town. In the general confusion the collector was bitten badly on the calf of his left leg by Mr. Mead's big dog. It would not be surprising if quite a crowd attended the public tax sale of the cow and the revolver which is advertised to take place Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock in front of the Adirondack hotel."The Glens Falls Morning Star, December 21, 1903: "Israel Mead, of Warrensburg, died at his home on Harrington hill, Saturday, aged about seventy years. About two weeks ago he was driving home from Warrensburg and let go of the reins for a minute. The horse started and he was thrown from the road cart, striking on his head and shoulders. "HIT BY AUTO. Retired Business Man of This City Has Narrow Escape – A Serious Injury. Charles E. Morey, connected with Morey & Lee of this city, was seriously injured last night in an automobile accident at Franklin Square. Mr. Morey stepped aside to allow several ladies to board an Albia car ahead of him, when an automobile, bearing New York state license No. 5,200 B, struck him. Theshield in front of the machine caught Mr. Morey in the throat and caused a deep gash. Dr. Hull attended, and said that he had never before seen a man live with such a cut. Mr. Morey lost much blood and is still in a weakened condition. At the Secretary of State's office in Albany this afternoon it was stated that license No. 5,200 B was taken out by Abraham Grunstein at 101 First Street. No such name appears in the local directory. Captain Morey is a veteran of the Civil War and was seriously wounded in that conflict."The Troy Times, December 8, 1915: "CAPT. CHARLES E. MOREY.
