What is Orange Flashed Sweet Potato (OFSP)?

A nutritious Orange-fleshed sweet

potato (OFSP) is rich in vitamin-A

variety is develop by International

Potato Center, Lima, Peru. Now It is

growing in popularity and

becoming an important strategyto improve vitamin A deficiency

across the world.

International Potato Center (CIP)

The International Potato Center, known by its Spanish

acronym CIP, was founded in 1971 as a root and tuber

research-for-development institution delivering sustainable

solutions to the pressing world problems of hunger, poverty,

and the degradation of natural resources. CIP is truly a global

center, with headquarters in Lima, Peru and offices in 20

developing countries across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Working closely with our partners, CIP seeks to achieve food

security, increased well-being, and gender equity for poor

people in the developing world.

IntroductionThe Kingdom of Saudi Arabia lies between 15.2° and 32.6° north

and 34.1° and 55.5° east and the climate is generally mild in the

winter and dry and hot in the summer. Rainfall occurs in the winter

but never exceeds 100 mm per year in most regions.

Major crops include cereals (wheat, sorghum, barley and millet),

vegetables (tomato, watermelon, eggplant, potato, cucumber and

onions), fruits (date-palm, citrus and grapes) and forage crops

(alfalfa). Why not sweet potato?

OFSP use as Small Cottage Industry at Rural Area

Global Challenges in OFSP Processing

• The double burden of malnutrition

• Promotion of processed products in the face of rising chronicdiseases in developing countries

Nutrition Security through Orange Flashed

Sweet Potato

CIP is developing linkages with other

biofortification and diet diversification efforts as

well as with wider nutrition and education

programs to realize the full nutrition potential of

OFSP at large scale.

The progress on further biofortification of sweet

potato to increase iron and zinc levels will produce

varieties with these traits in the coming years.
