DESCRIPTION

Located j u s t north of the present c i t y l i m i t s of C l i f t o n , the Gunarus and Ingerborg Shefstad house i s a one-and-a-half-story stone residence unoccupied since the 1950s. I t remains i n delapidated, but r e l a t i v e l y stable, condition, and few alterations affect i t s i n t e g r i t y . In plan i t i s of the symmetrical type and very similar to the Arneson (no. 39) or the Keddel Grimland (no. 10) houses. Unlike them, however, the f r o n t , or south, facade i s composed of three bays with only one window on either side of the central doorway. A f l a t arch bridges t h i s center opening, while segmental arches span the outer bays. The main entrance has been extensively altered, but i t probably f i r s t contained a double doorway. Two square holes i n the walls above t h i s doorway indicate the possible location of a porch. The rear w a l l also exhibits a three-bay composition, and has a f l a t archway over the broad, central opening. The outer bays, however, have stone l i n t e l s . An exterior stone chimney rises from the east gable end, while the gable roof i s covered w i t h sheets of corrugated metal. The i n t e r i o r i s i n poor condition and i s used fo r storage. No buildings associated w i t h the house remain standing, and a search of the Immediate area revealed no foundations.

SIGNIFICANCE

Gunarus Shefstad apparently arrived i n Bosque County sometime i n the 1860s, and purchased the land upon which the Shefstad house now stands i n 1868. This home pre­sumably was erected shortly a f t e r that date. I t i s the only structure i n th i s nomination that l i e s outside of the main Norwegian settlement area and i s a good example of the symmetrical type of stone house. I n addition to his occupation as a farmer, Shefstad was also a carpenter and cabinet-maker, and i n 1876, he was hired to help build Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
