On the Blog: Building a Makerspace
The new Longfellow Makerspace got
off to a great start with a community
work day in September. Students,
families and staff worked together to
build new worktables for the space.
We were there to see the project kickoff
with everything organized by Matt
Hinckley, Longfellow Science and Makerspace teacher. He gave
detailed plans for the tables and all the materials that were needed for
the tables were laid out beforehand. The community work day
exemplified the spirit of a Makerspace––collaborative, handsonlearning with something tangible to show for the time and effort.
We supported Longfellow's Makerspace
with a Strategic Impact Grant to get
it launched this year and the table
materials were funded through a
Friends & Family grant.
Read more about the community work
day and Longfellow Makerspace on our blog. Berkeleyside was there at
the community work day too! Read their article here.
Volunteer Recognition: Charles Schad
We offer a heartfelt congratulations to
Charles "Charlie" Schad, a Berkeley
Schools Volunteer, who was recognized
for his contribution to the wellbeing and
educational opportunities of Berkeley
youth by the Liberty Hill Missionary
Baptist Church. Charles was presented
with a certificate of recognition at the
church’s Education Recognition Sunday
service held on September 24th.
Charlie explains, "What I like the most is getting to know the kids, their
interests, and figuring out how to motivate them, not just to learn the
multiplication tables, but to recognize their own gifts, to value and
take charge of their own education." Thank you Charlie!
