NEW DELHI: Homegrown consumer goods firm Emami has forayed into the packaged honey category under its Zandu brand, fueling growth in a market that was so far growing in single digits. "The honey category has seen a lot of traction post the entry of Patanjali's honey but now another player has entered this fast growing and less cluttered space,"Abneesh Roy, analyst at Edelweiss Securities wrote in a note. Unlike Baba Ramdev's Patanjali which has pitched its honey on competitive pricing, Emami has positioned Zandu honey on quality and claims its product has zero sugar. Neither category leader Dabur nor Patanjali make such claims. While Patanjali has priced its honey at a 40% discount over Dabur, Emami's Zandu honey has priced itself at a 35% premium. "We believe Emami has entered the market at a time when Patanjali has created significant awareness in the category by positioning its product on better pricing. All this will certainly put pressure on Dabur," the Edelweiss note says. Honey is estimated at close to Rs 6.5 billion in category sales, and so far, Dabur has dominated the category with 60-65% share. "Healthcare for Emami under Zandu has seen significant growth and the new product launch is a smart move to continue this growth," the note adds.

Emami has entered into the packaged honey category under its Zandu brand. The homegrown consumer goods firm has positioned Zandu honey on quality and claims its product has zero sugar. The Emami’s Zandu honey has been priced at a 35% premium over Dabur. Emami manufactures products under various categories namely Hair Care, Skin Creams and Lotions, Talcum Powder and ayurvedic health care products. Emami’s Boroplus portfolio is worth Rs 400 crore, comprising of three brands -- BoroPlus Antiseptic Cream, Boroplus Advanced Moisturizing Lotion and BoroPlus Prickly Heat Powder.

The scrip opened at Rs. 965 and touched a high and low of Rs. 994.65 and Rs. 965 respectively. A total of 177472(NSE+BSE) shares were traded on the counter. The current market cap of the company is Rs. 21746.6 crore. The BSE group 'A' stock of face value Rs. 1 touched a 52 week high of Rs. 1367.9 on 05-Aug-2015 and a 52 week low of Rs. 775 on 12-Jan-2015. Last one week high and low of the scrip stood at Rs. 1008.8 and Rs. 945 respectively. The promoters holding in the company stood at 72.74 % while Institutions and Non-Institutions held 17.64 % and 9.62 % respectively. The stock traded above its 200 DMA.

India: Emami has made an entry under its Zandu brand in packaged honey category. Honey segment is said to be fast growing and less cluttered and this entrant can fasten the growth of this segment which has been growing in single digit so far. Country’s honey segment is estimated to be around INR 6.5 billion in category sales and is dominated by Dabur with the market share of 60-65 %. The market has positive outlook as Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali has created enough awareness in this segment with competitive pricing while highlighting the health benefits of consuming honey. When it comes to pricing, Patanjali prices its products at a 40 % discount over Dabur while Emami’s Zandu has been priced at 35 % premium. This pricing strategy will benefit consumers in terms of more chocies with different product segments. According to TechSci Research, Emami’s entry will make this a bigger market and its premium pricing will create new customer segment. Emami claims that its products will be sugar free which no other player has claimed ever. This move will put Dabur and Patanjali under pressure and we expect to see some new product ranges from them. Emami also enjoys good distribution and sales channel which comes at par with that of Dabur and Patanjali, which will help the company to compete in this segment.

Interestingly, the product is priced at a 35 per cent premium and claims to have no sugar, something which no other player has claimed ever. According to reports, Emami’s entry will make this category a bigger market, and its premium pricing will create a new customer segment. This fast growing category, yet less cluttered space, has seen lot of traction since the entry of Patanjali, which has priced its products at a 40 per cent discount over Dabur. Currently honey is estimated at close to Rs 6.5 billion in category sales, and so far, Dabur has a dominant share of 60-65 per cent. But Emami’s extensive distribution and sales channels, which level up to Dabur and Patanjali, will help it compete in this segment. Moreover, it will be interesting to see the competition with Emami’s extensive consumer products spilling into Ayurveda, with leading celebrities such as Amitabh Bachchan and Parineeti Chopra endorsing its brands. Emami manufactures products under various categories namely Hair Care, Skin Creams, Talcum Powder and Ayurvedic health care products, the company acquired Zandu brand in 2008 for Rs 700 crore.

India: Emami forays into packaged honey
FMCG major Emami is extending its ayurvedic brand Zandu with the addition of new packaged honey, according to an article in the Economic Times. Promoted as being sourced “from the best and most indigenous breeders and beekeepers”, Zandu Pure Honey is said to be “packed following stringent international quality standards to ensure purity & best quality honey”. In addition, it claims to contain no added sugar, unlike rivals that are said to contain up to 30% extra sugar. The Economic Times report notes that the move is likely to put pressure on established market player Dabur, which for decades was the only major brand of honey available in the organized market. In addition to Emami, Dabur is now also facing competition from the fast-expanding Pantajali Ayurved, offering “pure & natural”, “made in India” products. In a statement, the company said the product’s 100 per cent purity is guaranteed, and no sugar
is added to it.
