“Mayday, Mayday……We are the cargo ship ‘Shackleton’,
trapped in the ice following yesterday’s severe snow storm. Food and medical supplies
urgently needed to replenish the British Antarctic Expedition have been lost overboard and we are in
need of urgent aid. Our location is Lat 77˚ 39’ S, Long 35˚ 29’W……”
HMS PROTECTOR is on station in the Weddell Sea. The
Commanding Officer instructs the ships Navigator to plot a course to the given coordinates and calls his engineering officers to the Bridge. He tasks Lt James Caird to oversee the retrieval
of the lost supplies and to ensure the continued safe passage of the
stricken ship.
