Orangutans In The Wild

At Semenggoh Wildlife Centre

The orangutans at Semenggoh roam free. They are not caged. They have 650 hectares of jungle to live

in.

There are 24 orangutans living here. A family of orangutans need 500 hectares of jungle to provide them with the necessary food they need to survive. That’s why they get extra food supplied twice a day in the park

The afternoon I went, only two young orangutans of the 24 came to the feeding station. Earlier in the day, Ricthie, the dominant male in the

group attacked the viewing platform, sending tourists scurrying for cover.

Orangutans are wild animals. They can attack humans if they feel threatened. Here are the scars on the park warden’s leg

after he was attacked last year.
