Ocean Literacy
Ocean Literacy project: define the Essential Principles of Ocean Sciences for students & the general public
The ocean literacy network is a consortium of education, government and non-governmental organizations committed to establishing an ocean-literate public
An ocean-literate person: Understands the essential principles and fundamental concepts about the functioning of the ocean; Can communicate about the ocean in a meaningful way; and Is able to make informed and responsible decisions regarding the ocean
and its resources.

Ocean Literacy Essential Principles
The ocean literacy network determined seven essential principles that everyone should know about the ocean:1. Earth has one big ocean with many features. 2. The ocean and life in the ocean shape the features of Earth.3. The ocean is a major influence on weather and climate.4. The ocean makes Earth habitable.5. The ocean supports a great diversity of life and ecosystems.6. The ocean and humans are inextricably linked.7. The ocean is largely unexplored.
OST science objectives can be directly related to ocean literacy principles and concepts & provide content for ocean literacy educational products

Basic radar altimetry toolbox & tutorial
A joint ESA-CNES project Opensource software All satellites from ERS-1
to Cryosat, nearly all level of data
Mostly user-oriented… … but novice users and
students are often the same!

Reaching the public via media efforts
NASA Strategic Communications Framework wrt Earth studies: targets: congressmen and young adults illustrate the importance of science to US economy and benefits of
space
2006 Earth Science News - emphasis on climate change, global impacts of ocean-driven weather/climate (including an Oscar for An Inconvenient Truth movie)
Opportunities in 2007-2008; News driven stories (Climate change, Sea level rise,
Hurricane season, International polar year, El Nino/La Nina), Internally driven (Climate change, Ocean literacy, Sea level
rise, Climate-ocean link, Hurricane season, International polar year, El Nino/La Nina),
and Science driven stories --You fill this in!

Images are great tools for attracting attention…
but they need to be interpreted. Their meaning depends on the viewer’s background understanding, the context, …
