History of Leo Club Programme

Coach Jim Graver started the Leo ball rolling in 1957 and chances are that ball was a baseball. Graver was the baseball coach of the Abington High School in Pennsylvania, USA and an active member of the Glenside Lion Club. With help from his fellow Lion, William Ernst, the first Leo club was charted on December 5, 1957.

As the world’s first Leo club, the Abington High School Leo Club created the Leo acronym – Leadership, Equality, Opportunity – and they chose their school colors, maroon and gold to serve as the Leo Club colors. Later, Equality was changed to Experience

In October 1967, the board of directors of Lions clubs international adopted the Leo club program as an official program of the association.

The Leo Club program as been growing strong for over 50 years. Community service remains the cornerstone of the program. Like their Lion counterparts, Leo club members enjoy serving their neighbors and watching positive results unfold.

Leo Club Programme

Leo Clubs are open to young men and women of good character, ages 12 to 28, who are dedicated to making a difference in their communities. Each Leo is sponsored by a Lions Club. Leo Club members elect their own officers, schedule their own meetings and select their own fundraisers and service projects.

Popular service initiatives among Leo Clubs include protection of the environment, community improvement, Drug abuse prevention, Health education, Educational assistance, social services, and Citizenship promotion.

The social aspect of the Leo club program provides opportunities to meet other young people who share common interests, values and goals. The international scope of Leo clubs provides for interaction at regional Leo forums, he Lions international convention, “Club Twinning” or pen pal. In addition, Leos can apply for participation in the Lions international youth exchange and youth camp programs.

The Leo Club Program motto is: Leadership, Experience, Opportunity.

Benefits of Becoming a Leo

For the past 40 years, thousands of young people have benefited from membership in the Leo club program. Some of these benefits are tangible; others are intangible making new friends and viewing the world through another’s perspective are twoof the benefits of Leo service. As community volunteers, Leos often develop confidence and organization skills through this hands-on experience.

Leo club and District offices help young people develop these skills. In Multiple District 305, Pakistan, Leos participated in a leadership camp to develop motivational and organizational skills. Members of the Athens (Psichikon), Greece Leo club participated in a Leo seminar organized by their sponsoring Lions Club.

Another benefit of Leo club membership is experiencing teamwork. The Bandirma (Balikesir) Leos, Turkey, organized a fundraising dinner. Proceeds from the dinner benefited children in need. In Cyprus, members of the Famagysta Leo club work together to create a successful car wash fund raiser.

Membership in a Leo club also develops fellowship and camaraderie. As every lion knows, these are essential for a successful club. One of the many activities enjoyed by the Tokal Leo club, republic of South Africa, is bowling. The Leos have also enjoyed attending theatre events together,

playing active cricket, taking hikes and playing the trivial pursuit board game.

As members of a worldwide organization, Leos have international as well. Leos often participate in the Lions international youth camps and youth exchange programs. Leos clubs also participate in the Leo club twinning program.

As active community members, leos learn the true meaning of the leo club motto Leadership, Experience, Opportunity

Leadership – Leos develop skill as organizers, time managers, and motivates their peers Experience – Leo learn the importance of cooperation through the performance of community service Opportunity – Membership in a leo club provides young people with a chance to excel to develop character traits and to receive recongnition for their contributions to the community.

Message from the President Leo Club of Trincomalee Orr’s Hill

Becoming a Leo was probably one of the best decisions I’ve taken in my life. During this period as being a member of this great organization there. Hasn’t been many instances where I haven’t leant anything. Every success, every failure had been a learning point for me, and the learning never stops.

Let me thank all those Leos and Lions who have helped in various ways to reach the pinnacle of my leoistic career. Also my heartfelt gratitude goes to my mother, who was my guiding light in every steps I took to be here.

I have devised a plan which focuses on our Leos as well as the community in need, as I believe that the betterment of our Leos would pave the way for more effective services for the underprivileged and less fortune.

Let me congratulate and wish all the very best for the new leoistic year to my club officers and also all the club members who are the most vital part of our club. I’m certain I will obtain your fullest support and corporation in achieving my goals in this period.

Message from Lion President Elect & Leo Advisor of Leo Club of Trincomalee Orr’s hill

As a Leo Advisor since forming the club, proudly wish to

conduct on the occasion of 3rd official installation ceremony while having won the 2nd Runner Up Award in Leo District 306 C1 on which is remarkable achievement of newly born- Leo Club of Trincomalee Orr’s hill. Millions of children suffer with poverty and hunger, abandonment, poor water and sanitation, poor health care, chronic illness, disabilities, lack of education, lack of immunization and many more life-threatening conditions-Leo Club, In total, more than 144,000 young people in 139 countries are proud to serve others in their local communities and to call themselves Leos-LIONS bring young people together. Our Leo clubs provide youth volunteer opportunities that inspire and support leadership in young people ages 12 and up by giving them the chance to learn, grow and serve by participating in community service projects It is great pleasure of being a Leo for serving –Leo Club of Trincomalee under guidance of Lions Club of Trincomalee New Century under global leading service movement-The Association of International Lions Clubs

Our club and I cannot forget Leos- past presidents, key club officers and members deserved their valuable time in serving poor,

The installation ceremony also signs others about the meaningful and valuable services provided by the Club to the humanity as Leos which could be the symbol of Global leading service movement. Again I wish President Elect, key club officers and members to deserve to become a leading club in the district as well as multiple districts by building of good reputation and respects via needy services for poorest of poor on time.
