“They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke of the marvels of God, alleluia.”
Acts of the Apostles 2:4, 11
Dear Parishioners and Visitors of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Shrine,
This is one of my favorite times of year. The weather is great and the grounds around
the church, both St. Lawrence & St. Luke, are so beautiful. Sometimes I sit in the
Marian Shrine at St. Luke's to pray my rosary, it's a really nice spot. One of my
favorite times is just before I go into hear confessions at St. Lawrence in the evening.
I walk near the beautiful outdoor Guadalupe Shrine and pray Evening Prayer of the
Breviary. The sound of the running water and the magnificent colors of all the roses is striking. Often, I look
at the names of so many of our loved ones in the memorial pavers and pray for them. Many of the names
etched there in prayerful memory I can put a face to and I recall them. There is even a rosary make of colored
brick that surrounds the shrine, it's beautiful to pray as well.
One evening last week while I was at Our Lady's Shrine, a young couple with a small child
happened to pull up in a car, parked and came over to the shrine. They were very young and the child could
not have been more than a year old. They saw me with my prayer book so didn't really speak to me, just
nodded and I nodded a "hello" back to them. I continued walking slowly, reading, praying but I was close
enough to hear them speak. I wasn't purposely listening and couldn't hear exactly what was being said.
However, as I turned around and started back towards them, I could see that the young adults who appeared to
be the mom & dad, were praying. The little boy was sitting behind them, on the walkway exactly where the
cross for the embedded rosary is in the bricks as mom & dad faced the image of Mary. The little boy was
playing with some type of superhero figures and seemed content to just wait for his parents to finish. I was
about twenty feet away from them on the sidewalk along the outside of the church and I stopped in my tracks.
It was a scene that simply struck me as I looked at them. Literally, it was a meditation for me.
The thought that struck me was that the family really is the domestic church, the human community
where we learn what is so basic, so important to us as human beings. The spirituality of the Christian family
has built into it all the theology we teach as a church. It stresses God as relationship, the Trinity, while
acknowledge the individuality of each person. It has order of creation to it in its generational levels. It has a
completeness to it that gives us the ability to express love, charity, patience and all of the other virtues that
bring out the best in us, as human beings. What a wonderful homily was preached to me by this brief moment
while looking on this scene. It was simple but very powerful. It only lasted a few moments, however,
because little junior got up at one point and tossed one of his two superheroes in the water of the Shrine!
Mom wasn't happy and grabbed his arm and pulled him away while dad commenced with the rescue operation
of Spiderman or whoever it was that got chucked into the water. Even that, however, showed me the reality of
our human family. That is, sometimes, because of sin, it's the family that needs to correct us and show us that
we've done something wrong but we're still a part of the family.
I hope that as you join us this weekend as part of your spiritual journey, to pray as a part of this family
of God, that you have a chance to reflect on your family. Especially as we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost
this weekend, how has God's Spirit been breathed upon you and your family? It has, you know and it will
sustain you and enable you to live out your purpose as a member of your family and our human family. May
God bless you, your family; no matter what it is going through at this time, know that God will sustain your
family if you allow Him. May the Holy Spirit whose descent upon the Church we celebrate today be with and
guide us all as God's family. And if you see Batman floating in the Shrine, I think I know to whom he belongs.
God bless you,
Fr. Joe

Fifth Grade United States Museum Project
Students developed strong research, writing and public speaking skills through a year-long project studying the regions of the U.S. Each
developed a timeline for a state up to its statehood, created a poster and a written report on a famous person from their assigned state.
The finale was each student presenting a two minute presentations in the first person and dressing in character. Presidents and other famous
individuals in American history were well represented.

Episode V: “The Indispensable Men: Peter, Paul and the Missionary Adventure”
Father Barron calls Peter and Paul “two indispensable men, the ones
without whom the church never would have emerged and survived.” In telling each man’s story, Father Barron shows how the Holy Spirit worked through all the apostles and disciples to build the Church. Following the trail of these apostles as they took the Gospel to the ends of
the earth, Father Barron presents the foundations of the apostolic faith, particularly the revelation of Christ’s resurrection from the dead.

What is the School of Peace?
The Schools of Peace, as centers throughout the
world are called, offer an environment to support
children in their social and artistic efforts.
Each day the children have a different focus theme
for their time together that includes arts, music,
storytelling, science activities and physical activity.
Campers help to create the snacks of the day which
hopefully encourage them to choose healthy and
locally grown foods.
Every year more than thirty thousand children and
adolescents regularly attend the
Sant'Egidio School of Peace
around the world.
This is our fourth year of celebrating our children at
the School of Peace Camp.
Please call the parish office to reserve a place for
your camper.
