“Go out to the Whole world and Tell the Good News” (Psalm 117)
Mark’s Gospel tells us that Jesus sent out the Twelve. These twelve are also called
“apostles.” The word apostle means “one who is sent.” They were ordinary
people sent out with an extraordinary mission - to continue the mission of Jesus -
preaching, liberating, and healing. Jesus sends them in pairs, establishing his
mission as a communal endeavour.
The number twelve is also a symbolic number, representing the twelve tribes of
Israel. By naming twelve apostles, Jesus shows his mission to be in continuity with
the mission of God’s people, Israel.
The mission here foreshadows that of the Church, establishing something
essential for its life: that it is always a community on mission, entrusted with the
supreme treasure of the Gospel and the healing ministry carried out in the
Sacraments. Jesus continues to send us into the world as His disciples. But like the
first disciples, we are not sent alone.
Jesus has given us the community of the Church, which strengthens our life of
discipleship. The Christian message can only authentically be proclaimed in and
through the community of faith that is the Church. In our work with others, we
build this community of faith and can invite others to share in it.
Let us come together as one family to embrace this mission in different ways.
May the Holy Spirit guide us in our journey!
“At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the
word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison —
that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak”. (Colossians 4:3)
Blessings!
Noyichan

‘So they set off to preach repentance’ Mark 6:7-13
Australian Catholics are deeply aware of their own limitations and failings in
witnessing to the kingdom of Christ in the world... In many ways, the Church itself is
deeply wounded and in need of the healing love of its Lord. (Instrumentum Laboris #64)

Page 3 COMMUNITY NEWS
NEWS FROM ADULT FAITH FORMATION TEAM
All men in our parish are invited to this half day gathering. Bring yourself ... and bring a friend!
The Australian Catholic Men’s Gathering aims to inspire and encourage all men with a vision for personal
discipleship, service and mission in the family, parish/diocese and the world.
In this Year of St Joseph, please join thousands of men across Australia as you listen and learn, reflect and
share, pray and recognise how God is shaping your life for the mission of the Church. There will be an
opportunity to join others in a Novena: a preparatory prayer in the lead-up to your event for you and your
community.
The day will commence with the celebration of Mass at 9am, followed by three sessions that have been
pre-recorded, and this will be a wonderful opportunity to hear some excellent speakers who will inspire
you in your faith journey.
You will hear from Tomasz Juszczak who is the Director of Evangelisation Broken Bay. Tomasz has a
background in youth ministry and a passion for spreading the Gospel message of love and life to others.
He is a lay member of the Immaculata Community. He leads Session 1 “Man of God”
Next you will listen to Tim Davis who, in his words, is doing his best to serve God and His Church, love his
wife and children while teaching Catholic studies at St John Paul College. Tim will speak on “Man of
Service” and help you find your calling in the local mission.
The third session is hosted by Shayne Bennett. Some of you may already know him - Shayne has worked
full time in the Church for more than 40 years devoting his life to the Church’s mission with a special focus
on initiatives in youth evangelisation, pastoral formation and the development of lay communities. He will
lead a session on “Man of Character”.
There are flyers available this weekend - take one for yourself and one to share. Any questions, please ask
one of our team. Bookings are necessary and will close on Tuesday 27th July.

Safeguarding Update
From Monday 5 July 2021, Queensland will introduce new laws targeting sexual
offences against children. These changes should be noted by all Queenslanders,
including those within our parishes and schools and similar institutions.
The new laws focus on two areas, as described by the State Government:
“Adults in an institutional setting must protect children from the risk of a sexual
offence being committed against those children.”
“All adults must report sexual offending against children to police unless they have
a reasonable excuse.”
In summary, the changes include:
S.229BB: Failure to protect child from child sexual offence
Under this new offence, an adult will commit a crime that is liable for up to five years
jail if they:
know that “there is a significant risk that another adult will commit a child sexual
offence”; and
they have the power to remove or reduce that risk; and
they do not remove or reduce the risk; and
the offender is associated with an institution.
There is further reading available on these legislative changes:
A summary of the changes, as published by the State Government, can be found
here:
https://www.qld.gov.au/law/crime-and-police/types-of-crime/sexual-offences-
againstchildren/failure-to-report
Further information on what constitutes child sexual offences can be found on this
State Government website: https://www.qld.gov.au/law/crime-and-police/types-of-
crime/sexual-offences-againstchildren/laws#child-sexual-offence
The protocol for reporting child sex offences within the Archdiocese is to notify any
and all incidents to the Legal, Governance and Risk office via the
childabusealert@bne.catholic.net.au email address and/or the phone (07) 3324
3575. Where a person may be in danger of harm the police should be notified
immediately followed by notification to the Legal Governance and Risk Office. It is
an obligation not only as an Archdiocesan employee or volunteer, but as a citizen,
to properly understand these legislative changes.
Please be advised that the Open Day at Sophia College Plainland, scheduled for this coming
Friday 16 July has been cancelled due to their inability to guarantee COVID19 restriction
compliance.
