OUR HISTORY The Technical School for Building Surveyors in

Cava de’ Tirreni was founded on October 1st, 1962.

Cava Economic Society “had already been suggesting for some years to found a High School” to prepare the young for Technical Studies and Commerce.

It was possible to carry out that idea founding a Provincial Technical School thanks to the support of our local authority and the financial aids of the Province of Salerno.

The school was a branch of the Technical School “Genovesi” in Salerno.

At first it was located in Della Corte Palace (foto) in Corso Umberto I and it was named “Matteo Della Corte”.

It offered 5 year courses of studies in two areas:

AccountancySurveying with five classes for each area.

Later when the school population encreased, it received extra classrooms in the 17th century Convento delle Clarisse di San Giovanni.

As years went by, the school grew in size and it was necessary to move it from the city centre to the outskirt in San Lorenzo Road and later in 1967,to build a new building in Prolungamento Marconi.

On 23rd November 1980 a violent Earthquake destroyed part of the school so classes were delocated in different local schools.

It was redeveloped and since the school year 1989/90 the course for Surveyors was separated by the one for Accountants.

It was then that the Technical Institute for building surveyors started operating as an autonomy school.It was located in Generale Luigi Parisi Street.

At the beginning of the 1990’s the school was named “Luigi Vanvitelli” to honour the famous architect who had built the imposing Royal Palace in Caserta and many other important works.

LUIGI VANVITELLI

Luigi Vanvitelli (1700 – 1773) was an Italian engineer and architect. The most prominent eighteenth-century architect of Italy, he practiced a sober classicizing academic late Baroque style that made an easy transition to Neoclassicism.

Vanvitelli was born in Naples, the son of a Dutch painter of land and cityscapes who also goes by the name Vanvitelli.

He was trained in Rome by the architect Nicola Salvi, with whom he worked on construction of theTrevi Fountain.

Following his notable successes in the competitions for the facade of the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano(1732)

and the facade of Palazzo Poli behind the Trevi Fountain, Pope Clement XII sent him to the Marche to build some papalprojects.

In Rome, Vanvitelli stabilized the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica when it developed cracks and found time to paint frescos in a chapel at Saint Cecilia in Trastevere.

Beginning in 1742 Vanvitelli designed (along with Nicola Salvi) the Chapel of St.John the Baptist for King John V of Portugal. It was built in Rome, disassembed in 1747, and shipped to Lisbon, where it was reassembled in the Church of St. Roch.

It was completed in 1750, although the mosaics in it were not finished until 1752. Built of many precious marbles and other costly stones, as well as gilt bronze, it was held to be the most expensive chapel in Europe up to that time.

Vanvitelli's technical and engineering capabilities, together with his sense of scenographic drama led Charles VII of Naples to commission the great Palace of Caserta, intended as a fresh start for administering the ungovernable Kingdom of Naples.

Vanvitelli worked on the project for the rest of his life, for Charles and for his successor Ferdinand IV.

In Naples he designed the Palazzo Reale (1753) and some aristocratic palaces, and churches. .

His engineering talents were exercised as well: for Caserta he devised the great aqueduct system that brought water to run the cascades and fountains.

CASERTA PALACE

The Palace of Caserta, in Italian Reggia di Caserta, is a former royal residence in Caserta, constructed for the Bourbon Kings of Naples. It was the largest palace and probably the largest building erected in Europe in the eighteenth century.

In 1996, the Palace of Caserta was listed among the World Heritage Sites on the grounds that it was "the swan song of the spectacular art of theBaroque, from which it adopted all the features needed to create the illusions ofmultidirectional space

Nowadays the Technical High School Luigi Vanvitelli is in Via Papa Giovanni XXIII in Cava.

Today our school has twenty-four classes and it offers two traditional Courses and three Experimental ones.

It has its own branch in Roccapiemonte with twelve classes and it is 7 kilometers from Cava.

CHARACTERISTIC OF OUR SCHOOL

Technical drawing is a form of graphic communication. This type of drawing is used in the transforming of an idea into physical form. Today the mechanics of the drafting task have been greatly accelerated through the use of CAD systems.

Topography (topo-, "place", and graphia, "writing") is the study of Earth's surface features. It specifically involves the recording of relief or terrain, the three-dimensional quality of the surface, and the identification of specific landforms. It is often considered to include the graphic representation of the landform on a map by a variety of techniques.

STUDIES

Building surveyors provide professional advice and services to building owners.

Once qualified, the students can work in a wide range of different areas including the design of new buildings, refurbishment, specification and supervision of construction work, alterations and extensions to existing buildings. They may also be involved in negotiation with adiacent property owners when building work affect their legal rights.

AFTER SCHOOL

Leaving students are granted admission to any Italian University department.
