Our Solar SystemBy Jacob Gardner

The Sun

• The black markings on the sun are sun spots. They are cooler areas of the sun that disappear in a few weeks.

• The sun is made out of gas like hydrogen and helium.

• The sun is 28,000,000,000 F.

• The sun is 4,500,000,000 yrs old.

• The sun is 1,000,000,000 miles wide. It's so big you could fit 1,000,000,000 earths inside.

Mercury

• Mercury doesn’t have any moons or rings.

• Mercury is the smallest planet.

• Mercury is the closest planet to the sun but isn't the hottest.

• Your weight on Mercury would be 38% of your weight on Earth.

Venus

• Venus is the second natural brightest object in the sky.

• Venus is sometimes reffered to as the morning star or the evening star.

• One day on Venus is longer than a year.

• Venus is named after the Roman Goddess of love and beauty.

• Venus is sometimes called Earths sister.

• Venus is the same size as Earth but spins the opposite way.

Earth

• The Earth was once believed to be the center of the universe.

• The Earth has a powerful magnetic field.

• There is only one natural satilite of Earth.

• Earth is the only planet not named after a god.

• The Earths rotation is gradually slowing.

Mars

• It's the planet most like Earth.

• It's further away from the sun making it very cold.

• Scientists have discovered ice beneath the surface.

• That may mean that life used to be there.

• Mars has two moons.

• Mars' red shade is made by iron in the planet's surface.

Cere's

• Ceres is the only dwarf planet in the asteroid belt, the other four are in the Kyiper belt.

• Ceres diameter is 950 km. Its distance from the sun is 413,700,000.

• Orbit period 4.60yrs

• It was discovered in 1801 and was classed as an astoroid, a comet and now a dwarf planet.

Jupiter

• Jupiter is the biggest planet in our solar system.

• It's so big it's 2.5 times the size of all the other planets combined.

• It's made mainly from gas and is known as one of the four gas giants along with Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

• Jupiter has 64 moons.

• It's the size of 1,300 Earths.

Saturn• Saturn is the second largest planet in

the solar system.

• It has nine beautiful rings that can be seen from a telescope.

• It's rings are made up of ice, rock, and dust.

• Saturn spins very fast and on its axis-a day on Saturn is 10 hours.

• It has 62 moons.

Uranus

• Uranus is the only planet that rotates on its side.

• Uranuses biggest moon is called Titania.

• Uranus is so far away, that if you where travalling to it from the sun, when you made it to Saturn you'd be half way there.

• It's a very cold place with tempretures reaching as low as -371 (-224).

Neptune

• Neptune is the furthest planet from the sun.

• Neptune is a cold, icey giant.

• Its a very bright blue due to methane gas with a water layer that leads down to a solid core the size of Earth.

• It takes 165 yrs to orbit the sun, meaning that its winter lasts 40 yrs.

Pluto

• Pluto is named after the god of the under world.

• Pluto was reclassifide as a dwarf planet in 2006.

• Pluto was discovered on February 18th 1930.

• Pluto has five moons.

• One is Charon, and that moon is so large that Pluto orbits it aswell.

• Pluto is the largest known dwarf planet.

Haumea

• Haumea's shape is warped into an oval shape due to its fast rotation.

• They argued over who really found it.

• It takes 285 yrs to orbit the sun because its so far away.

• One day on Haumea is 3.9 Earth hours because it is one of the fastest rotating objects in the Solar System.

Makemake

• Makemake is the largest Kuiper belt object.

• The extremely low tempreture of this planet -243.2 F.

• It has no satalites(moons)

• Makemake is covered in Methane,Ethane and probably Nitrogine ices.

• It has no Atmospheare.

• It was discovered in 2005.

• Makemake was one of the reasons Pluto lost it's status.

Eris

• It takes 557 yrs to orbit the sun.

• Eris got a position of being the tenth planet from the sun.

• Eris was named after the greek Godess of discord.

• Eris is the second largest dwarf planet.

• All the objects in the astoroid belt could fit in Eris.

• Eris is not always the most distant dwarf planet.
