What are prescription drugs?These are drugs that are prescribed by a doctor for some type of medical condition.

What is prescription drug abuse?When someone takes a medication that

was prescribed for someone else or takes their own medication in a way that it was not intended for.

Some street names for the three most common abused prescriptions.Opioids- oxy, vikes, hillbilly, and

happy pills

Stimulants- uppers, speed, smart drug, and skippy

Depressents- candy, downers, sleeping pills, and tranks

A 2009 survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that prescription drug abuse is on the rise, with 20% of teens saying they have taken a prescription drug without a doctor's prescription

Side Effects from abusing theseTaking just one large dose of a Opioids

can lead to difficulty breathing and death. Taking a high dose of a stimulant can

cause high body temperature, seizure, and death.

Mixing depressants with other medication can slow the heart and respiration and cause death.

Commonly used and prescribed prescription drugs. Opioids- Oxycontin, Percocet, and Vicodin(treat severe and chronic pain)

Stimulants- Adderall and Ritalin (treat ADHD, sleep disorder, and depression

This is found most commonly in cough and cold medicines

What is DXM and how is it abusedDextromethorphan is the is the active

ingredient found in many over-the-counter cough and cold medications.

This is taken oraly, usually as a liquid syrup or pill. People who abuse it take it in large doses.

Side effects and street names for DXMIt can alter the brain making you feel

detached from the environment and not oneself.

Street names for this are candy, dex, robo, and skittling .

Tips for taking prescription drugs or medicine. Do not take someone elses prescriptions. Do not increase or decrease the dosage

without checking with your doctor. Make a note of the effects it has on you to

tell your doctor. Keep any information your pharmacist

gives your about the drug. Read the label and directions.
