Congratulations on becoming a member of the fi rst-year class at Michigan Technological University, and welcome to our community! We share fi ve values that will provide a framework for your Michigan Tech experience.
Community: During Orientation, you will meet other members of the Michigan Tech community. It is important that you treat one another with kindness, thoughtful consideration, and respect. Be generous in your attitude with one another and support your peers. You will also have the opportunity to learn more about the local Houghton community that you will call home during your time at Michigan Tech.
Scholarship: Academic success is central to your experience at Tech. You will learn about campus resources and hear tips from faculty, staff, and experienced students that will help you excel in your studies.
Possibilities: At Michigan Tech, opportunities are everywhere. You have the ability to study abroad, join clubs, research, and solve the world’s problems. Learn about how you can use your skills, knowledge, and potential to explore possibilities.
Accountability: You are in college, which means you are now responsible for your well-being and success. We will do our best to support you, but you need to act with integrity, honesty, and diligence as you pursue your education.
Tenacity: We live in the Upper Peninsula; you have to be a little tenacious to come here. Now is the opportunity to develop the confi dence and skills to survive and thrive through even the most challenging obstacles.

I am a part of Orientation Executive Staff as Training Coordinator. I am at Michigan Tech to study biology, and I chose to come here for the stunning natural areas the Keweenaw provides, and the research opportunities along with them. I am constantly in pursuit of understanding the unique diversity and intricate systems of living things and ecosystems, especially those of the Great Lakes Region. I hope through Orientation I can inspire a love for learning and introduce incoming students to the variety of opportunities this unique place holds.“
- Andie Norton, Training Coordinator
“
ORIENTATION EXECUTIVE STAFF
I’m the Logistics Coordinator on this year’s Orientation Executive Staff. When I arrived at Tech, I was the only person double-majoring in theater technology and mechanical engineering. Despite the odd combination, I will graduate having had three internships in the industry, including experience working on machinery for Cirque du Soleil, Disney, and more. I won’t say that anything is possible, but my experience at Michigan Tech makes me have to think twice. My goal for Orientation is to show all the new students how inspiring this place can be.”
- Jason Scott, Logistics Coordinator
“
I am a part of the Orientation Executive Staff as the Program Coordinator. As a psychology major at Michigan Tech, I have had great opportunities and experiences such as interning in a community transition class for adults with moderate cognitive impairments, and volunteering as a crisis line specialist. I even became a Big Sister during my time here. Michigan Tech and the Houghton-Hancock community have so much to offer students. Through Orientation, I hope to help guide students to step out of their comfort zone and become a part of our community.
- Neffertia Tyner, Program Coordinator
“
Orientation Executive Staff is a group of student staff that dedicate their summer to planning a weeklong Orientation for nearly 1400 fi rst-year students. Their passion for seeing students succeed is next to none. Without them, Orientation Week would be impossible.

CREATEYOURHUSKYEXPERIENCE
- Tristan Kolb, Student
Studying materials engineering at Tech is incredibly interesting to me, but what really keeps me going is the outdoors. I work for Michigan Tech’s Outdoor Adventure Program and love spending my free time hiking, exploring, and taking photos of the wonderful Keweenaw and the rest of Upper Michigan. This summer I’ve been researching chemical properties at a local business in Hancock, just across the bridge.”
Throughout this booklet you will read some of the unique stories of our students. From each of their diverse backgrounds and awesome interests, they all have one thing in common:
They’ve started their legacy at Michigan Tech and created their own Husky Experience. What will yours be?

I’ve had the opportunity to work intently alongside faculty and staff from the Dean of Students Offi ce, the Visual and Performing Arts Department, Michigan Tech IT, and Michigan Tech Athletics. I can tell you from experience that Michigan Tech is truly a place where anything is possible.”
