Hi Janelle,
Thomas KING was on the 1812 Franklin Co., tax list. I wonder if this means he had land. I have not
found the deeds yet. His probate was 1840 Coffee Co. I don't have the land or heirs info from that probate.
Maybe not shown until wife Elizabeth died. Don't know when she died. Maybe still not easily found and have to
look for land transactions to their kids.

Subject: RE: Burrows Cove
Hi Janelle,
I found this in my BulkMail folder. Drat. Anyway I looked but couldn't find anything on Revolutionary war
service for Anthony BURROWS. I did find an Anthony Burrows who was a Captain in the 32 Regiment of Franklin
Co., TN according to page 91 of Records of Commissions of Officers in theTenn. Militia 1796-1811; Vol.1
compiled by Mrs. John T. Moore. So... maybe he had military experience and so maybe had revolutionary war
service. I will have to write to the National Archives to see, unless you can suggest an alternate way to check on
this. I wonder what area the 32 Regiment recruited from? Oh... it said Franklin Co. but I wonder if Franklin Co.
had more than one regiment and which regiments came from where in Franklin Co.?
The Heritage Book mentions a Burrows Cemetery. Where is it?
I have forwarded your e-mail to my wife. Maybe she will get a hold of Willene and Jerry.

Subject: Re: Burrows Cove
Hello Janelle,
Thanks for these two pages on Anthony Burrows and his descendants. Please send the other 5 pages
if you have time. Thanks Where were their 300 Acres?
(Find a map of Grundy County on the Internet and look for Elkhead or Elk River. When you find the beginning
of the river, you have found the Burrows property.)
According to the land grant from the state of TN, Anthony Burrows was granted 300 acres of land in Frankiin
Co.,TN , 3rd Civil District, on both sides of Eik River including the head on 9 Jan. 1810 (recorded in Book A
Franklin Co. Record Book, p. 71, 10 April 1810) The land had been surveyed 20 June 1808. Obadiah
Bean was also granted 300 acres adjoining the Burrows property. Matthew Jones' land adjoined the Burrows
property as well. You can find the head of Elk River very easily. It comes from under the mountain at a spot
called the Slue Hole and is fed by smaller springs along the way, so you should be abie to locate the
general vacinity of the Burrows property with no problem. Willene Campbell lives in Burrows Cove and would
be an excellent guide to the area. She is a friend of mine and can be reached at 931 467-3603. If she is not
able to guide you, she can suggest someone who will.
Is that a large, medium or small track for the early 1800's? 300 acres apparently was one increment of size of
land grants of the day, but there were people who owned much smaller areas and a few who owned much
larger ones. It might be interesting to delve into trying to find why Anthony was given a land grant. Could he
have been in the Revolutionary War? The grant may have been payment for service.
We have been unabie to find an old Burrows Cemetery in the Cove. My friend Willene suspects that an old
cemetery with unmarked graves on a hill across the road from her house may have been trie final resting placeof the Burrowses who died in the Cove. I am also sending you the email address of another person who lived in
Burrows Cove who may be able to help you. He is Ron Crabtree. rpjicrab^orncastjiet
A cove is an area of flat land (valley) nestled in between two mountains. It may be very broad or quite narrow.
You will see that the Burrows property gets far into the cove where it narrows with mountains apparent on either

The Robert Box family moved to the 3rd Civil District on the Elk River in 1809 when he was granted 196 acres,
which adjoined Abraham Hargis and Henry Gotcher. On 16 Oct. 1815, Robert bought an additional 100 acres
from Wm. Cross. Robert Box has a will in Franklin Co. Will Book 1808-1876 p. 47 in which he lists: John,
Robert, George. James, fvlicajah, Neely, Mary who m. Virdeman Joy, and Sarah who m. Charles McDaniel. By
1830, the only Box surname found in Franklin Co. was James Box.

Subject: Burrows - Heritabe Book Index
Hi Janelle,
Thanks for Burrows page 4. Also for the idea that maybe the missing messages were in my Buikmail
directory. You are right. I found a couple e-mails with responses in red that I will get to later today. I was
wondering why you hadn't answered some of my questions and now I find that you did. I also found several
Burrows pages. I wonder why sbcglobaLyahoo is filtering the way it is.
Thanks for sending the URL to the Heritage Book index. Very interesting. I found this index once via
Google but since it was not titled I didn't know what it was an index of.
Other wish list items for your GCHS web pages might be:
1) Census district boundaries. So once we know the census district then we could place where the people were
living more precisely.
2) Do the tax lists also indicate what area the land was located. Then it would be nice if these areas could be
defined.
3) Does the County Recorder's Office have old maps showing who owned the land in the 1840's. If you could get
digitalized copies of these maps these would also be wonderful.
4) If the Recorder's Office doesn't have very old maps then maybe at a Title Company office- I have seen many
very nice old maps showing who owned what land at Title companies. They usually don't want to be bothered by
the public but I have obtained help from them when the links at the Recorder's Office seem to be incorrect.
5) Another fantastic research project would be to digitize the index cards at the title company. You have to get to
the oldest title company usually nearest the county court house.
6) Another very useful project is to digitize the card catalogs and files of the old mortuaries. These files have
been in the family for generations. They are eventually bought out by large commercial firms and these old
records are tossed out
7) Many court houses and country recorders are microfilming their books and then tossing the books to gain
space and cut down on genealogical traffic. This is a real loss. When not all pages are filmed, or are not in focus,
then valuable data is lost If this happens in your county then GCHS might consider asking the county to build an
air conditioned building for the storage of these records and then allow GCHS to be the trustee and custodian for
these records.

Hello Janelie Taylor, GCHS President
Thanks for sending Burrows page 3. Now just one more Burrows page 4, when you have time.
I have now looked over the GCHS web site. Looks good. I especially like the Pathfinder and other things
for sale, including the Grundy County Heritage Book. I wish I could see the indexes for these publications that
hopefully include all surnames listed and their pages. That would really be helpful for newcomers and
researchers in your area to know what they might be interested in ordering.
I have registered my surnames with Sharon.
I see queries go to you. So here is my Query:

BURROWS, KING, BOX, and JONES
Searching for info on BURROWS, KING, BOX, and JONES in Franklin Co., TN 1807-1836, Coffee Co., TN 1836-
1844, and Grundy Co., TN 1844-1855. They were living primarily between Burrows Cove and Pelham, I think.
Pioneers to the SW Grundy Co. area were: 1) Anthony BURROWS ca. 1775 NC-1822 TN, 2) Thomas KING
1768 ??-1840TN, 3) Robert BOX <1775 SC-1821 TN. 4) Four kids of James JONES ca.1755VA?-1820 GA:
John, Mary (mlHOLLINGSWORTH, m2.CUNNINGHAM), Salina (m.BOX), Joicey (m.HOLLINGSWORTH).

Grundy Co. Goes to War. Where is space for Revolutionary War burials If people were coming to the
Grundy Co. area by 1807 then there must be deaths and some of them probably served in the war of 1776 only
30 years earlier.
Are townships or other governmental subdivisions important to anyone. A map of townships in the county
would be nice.
Also a good map of rivers, creeks, mountains, and other things mentioned in land transactions wouid be
very helpful.
Thanks for all your help and I'm looking forward to page 4 on BURROWS.

Are you aware that there are Grundy Co. Heritage Books that recount the history of this area and many of the
families here? The books are 512 Pages, attractively hardbound and fully indexed. They are $72 postpaid.
They're worth the investment.

James,
I'm glad to see you're still researching the Burrows line. A few years back you sent me a copy of a
document that proved my husband's gggrandfather Silas Burrows was a son of Antliony Burrows' son
Russell Burrows. I would love to know more about Russell. Someone told me they thought he died in
Benton County, Alabama of rabies in the 1840's. Silas F. Burrows and wife Nellie Perry Burrows are
buried in Waites Cemetary in Lauderdale County, Alabama along with other Burrows family members.
Their daughter Lena Burrows married Lindsey Cherry. Lena is buried at Waites, also, but Lindsey is
buried at Shiloh in Hardin County, Tennessee. I have been told that he was first buried at Waites and
his body was later moved to Shiloh. Lindsey and Lena's daughter Annie Lee Cherry married William
Henry (Will) Haynes. Will and Annie were my husband's grandparents. I wish I had more info to
share. If I find more about Russell, I will post it to the list. Thanks again for helping me.

I meant to include Anthony's will.
A widely distributed extract of the will says that Anthony did not him to have any part
He actually said: I desire that Samuel Morse is not to have any privileges as a MINOR in the land above mentioned. It sounds
as if he was not leaving him anything. Earlier in the will was this: First of all I leave 162-1/2 acres of land known by the Pear place to
my three sons James Burrows, John Burrows and Josiah Burrows to be divided as follows: the East Side of the River to be divided
between James and John and share and share alike, James having the lower end next to James Stanly, Josiah having what lies on
the West side of said river entire to himself this being their entire share as part of my real estate by their PAYING 33-1/3 each unto
my son SAMUEL BURROWS on or before the sale of my personal property.
I desire that Samuel Morse is not to have any privileges as a minor in the LAND above mentioned
Elizabeth Burrows remain in full possession of all my property now on hand both real and personal until her death have a sale to take
place and sell all of the personal property not bequeathed and the amount to be equally divided and each child to have the money to
be equally divided throughout All the children share and share alike.Anthony Burrows Will, pp. 49-50, 25 Aug 1822.

FATHER NOTES; James BURROWSGeneral: A Burrows Family History, Compiled by Marian Carter Ledgerwood (Mrs. L. W-, Jr.
P O. Box 8081, Hot Springs Village, Arkansas 71909-8081. From Family History Library, 35 North West Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah

Anthony Burrow of Franklin Co., Tennessee - p. 58
From Earl MeekJames Burrows, bom about 1800 in SC and his wife born about 1800-1807, had 3 boys born before the 1830 census. They may have been
among those young Burrows couples who sought their fortunes by migration to Texas in the 1830s and 1840s. There was another James who
headed up a household in the 1830 census and was approximately the same age. He is thought to have been the son of John born in 1790-95.
He, too, does not appear again in a Tennessee census.
4. James Burrows was born cl 800-1810. He probably was one ofthe two males between ages of 18 and 26 who were listed in the household
ofAnthony Burrows in 1820 census of Franklin Co., Tennessee.
He was named executor in his father's will, date 1822, also in the final settlement in February 1836.There were two men named James Burris listed on page 82 in the 1830 census ofFranklin County, Tennessee. Both were between ages of
20 and 30. Each had a wife of 20-30. One had no children listed in his household; the other had a son and daughter under age 5.
Two deeds are listed in the Reverse Index for Franklin County, Tennessee: James Burrow from Jessee Gunn, 240 acres adjoining Robert
Hudspeth, Book Q, p. 59; and James Burrow from Wash. Taylor and wife, estate of Levy Shorly, Book Q, p. 23.[20] [Franklin Co. TN
Deeds. Reverse Index to Deeds A-K 1807-1899.
James R. Davis says James moved to Mississipppi about 1842. That he left Mississippi for Texas but did not live near his brothers or sister.

From Earl MeekWilliam Burrows born about 1796-1798 in SC. His wife was approximately the same age. They had at least 2 boys and probably otherchildren. There was a William H. Burrows living in Pelham Valley in the late 1830s. I believe they were the same William, however the
time frame would have permitted that William H. could have been the oldest son of William.
From James R. Davis
William died by 1836 and we don't know what happened to his family.

A boy born between 1825 and 1830 was living in the household ofThomas and Jane in 1840. We never heard anything more of this boy(name unknown), not even in Thomas' will in 1856. He may have been their son that married, or moved on to Texas, or died. Or he couldsimply been someone's child that Thomas and Jane were caring for temporarily.

This turned out to be not as bad as I thought.
The children of Anthony are pretty mixed up. Some are missing and there are extras and they are
out of order. I will send a group sheet with notes for them to straighten this out. I'll also send a copy
of Elijah and Catherine's Bible. It is of interest because it gives the birth date of Elijah's father, Isaac
Muckleroy, as well as the names and dates for children and parents. The records in Nacogdoches
Co., TX are very good.
Larger differences are with vii Joseph Albert Lusk. This appears to be Jo Alma. She was probably
named that and called Jo Alma. I have no different information. So she appears to be Female and
Luther Nathaniel Anderson appears to be the male. This is not my research, but a conclusion I drew
from the information.
Child of John Burrows and Martha Richardson is not correct.
They have children, but Elijah Muckleroy Burrows is not one of them.
Elijah Muckleroy Burrows is a son of David Burrows (son of Anthony) and Mary JOANNA "Mollie"
Millard. Elijah was the grandfather of my aunt's husband, George Van Burrows. Elijah's house is still
standing in Nacogdoches. Mary Joanna Milfard's father would not let Elijah marry her until he built
her a house. The land where it stood was sold to build a hospital and the house was moved to a
historic site with other houses cared for a Millard descendant named Lera Mitlard Thomas, widow of
Albert Thomas (Federal House of Representatives). She is now deceased also, but the houses are
still there. David (son of Anthony) Burrows'daughter, Celia Burrows married the brother of Mary
Joanna "Mollie" Millard. His name was Joshua John "Josh" Millard.
There are other differences, but in some instances there are a few children I am missing and I have
a several children not included. This is not going any further in descent than has been done by Mr.
Douglas. Some of the information seems to have come from Mr. Meeks' research. There are about
3 instances where more research is needed. An extra child or some name spelled strangely. That
sort of thing.
I'll try to send a group sheet for Anthony Burrows and a copy of the Bible Pages for Elijah Muckleroy
and his wife Catherine Burrows - oldest daughter of Anthony.
I have some information about a Burrows who was killed in a mine. I don't remember just who it was
file://C:VDocuments and SettingsUane Douglas\Local Settings\Temp\35EC4CFD-35A6-4F... 9/18/2007

at this time. I'll have to try to remember the best way to do a search. I just have too many Burrows
on the list. It would be one who didn't come to Texas so that narrows it a bit. I'll try to find that.
The Burrows children of Anthony and Elizabeth who came to Texas were Catherine (my ancestor)
who married Elijah Muckleroy, her brother, David and her brother Josiah. I have a lot of information
and descendants of these three. Elijah and Catherine stopped off in Benton Co., AL (now Calhoun).
There were siblings who came with them. Rusself and Rachel. Russell died there and Rachel
returned to Grundy and lived with her mother, Elizabeth. Elizabeth Burrows left a will.
I worked on trying to find out more about Anthony. I have seen that he was in Surry Co., NC, but I
have had researchers tell me that was not proven. I have not worked in Surry County for the
Burrows. My ancestor, William Floyd lived at One Mile Creek and the Burrows family lived at Six
Mile Creek in Pendleton District/County, South Carolina. The Tubb, Moore, and Hargis and Box
families lived near. I expect there were more who came from there to Franklin County. I'm working
on trying to find where they were before they moved to South Carolina, but have been unable to find
them. I know where the Tubb family was, but not the others. Not yet!
Have a nice holiday.
