SPEAKER INFORMATION MEETING – COLD CASES
Our speaker in March featured Lt. Shane Disotell of Phoenix Police Department’s Violent Crimes Division
and Detective Dominique Roestenberg of Cold Cases, both 20-year veterans of the Phoenix PD. They shared
honestly with our members their frustrations with unsolved cases. Largely, the Cold Case Unit went from 8
detectives to currently 2. This is due to not having enough officers at Phoenix PD in general and some
detectives being put to work to patrol our city to keep it safe. Other contributing factors are budget constraints
and a back log of evidence testing at the Crime Lab, which faces similar problems with staffing at a time when
murders are increasingly happening on a near-daily basis. Phoenix is attempting to hire more officers, but it is
not easy in today’s harsh climate against officers and even with something as simple as many of the applicants
not qualifying if they have used marijuana in their past. So, how, with all of these challenges, can a cold case
5
be solved? Lt. Disotell assured us he is doing all he can to remedy the situation including putting Detective
Roestenberg in charge of reviewing cold cases. But they are also thinking outside the box such as putting Silent
Witness decks of cards in the prisons featuring victims and their cases because they have learned inmates talk to
each other and often someone comes forward with new information to help an unsolved murder. Phoenix is
also working with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office Cold Case Division, of which two seasoned
prosecutors are now reviewing these cases as well, to see what can be accomplished to assist detectives.
Utilizing more technological advances will also help with solving more murders.
Recently a 35-year old case was solved as they had DNA on file. Unfortunately, with a case this old, it is often
hard to find witnesses from that many years ago. The original case agent had passed away, but continued
persistence found a patrol officer that had been on the scene at the time who watched the case agent collect
evidence. Simply having strong physical evidence with no corroborating witness could have likely resulted in a
weak, still unsolved case.
Detective Roestenberg shared he wants nothing more than to catch all the bad guys and get justice for the
victims and he will review a case if you contact him. He says to be patient though, as it takes time to go over all
the files and pictures and see if anything can be done.
*There was some heated discussion of what more can be done to get additional funding for both officers and
lab techs. It ultimately lies in the hands of our legislature and city officials. You can get involved by writing or
calling them and requesting they do more to solve this problem, preferably more sooner than later, but be
assured the Phoenix Police Department will continue to do all they can to resolve the issues also.

CHAPTER’S 23rd
ANNUAL FUNDRAISER DINNER AND AUCTION
Our annual fundraiser auction and dinner for this year was very successful in raising funds for our chapter so
that we may provide our programs and services to our families. This year we had some sponsors for our event:
Phoenix Law Enforcement, Desert Diamond Casinos, Jackson’s Family Carwash, Sara Powell (crime victims’
civil attorney) and the Never Again Foundation. Thank you to everyone who attended or donated prizes, or
both. We cannot do this alone. Members of valley law enforcement agencies, the judicial field and other victim
services groups also attended to support us. Our auctioneer, Kevin Spratley, of Sonoran Benefit Auctions,
donated his services and our DJs from MIXX IT, reduced their fee. We appreciate all the support. Next year
6
we are changing our event to the last Saturday in February. For the past 23 years, it has been the last Friday.
With growing traffic on Fridays and people arriving too late to bid on our Silent Auction prizes, we feel this
change will be for the best.

NEWS FROM NATIONAL POMC
Website: www.pomc.org Phone 888-818-7662
E-mail: natlpomc@pomc.org
The National Office has moved to a new location. Our address is 635 West 7th
St., Suite 104, Cincinnati, OH
45203.
The 32nd
Annual National POMC Conference will be held in Arlington, Virginia, at the DoubleTree
by Hilton Hotel/Washington DC on August 2-5, 2018. The room rates are $109.00 and the closest
airport to fly into is Reagan National Airport. They also have a free shuttle service to the hotel. The
registration form is on the POMC website now www.pomc.org.
National Crime Victims’ Rights Week is April 8 -14, 2018. The theme this year is “Expand the Circle
Reach All Victims”. If anyone attended the 2013 Conference in Cincinnati you may have met Brooks
Douglass. His revised movie will be at movie theaters the week of Crime Victims’ Rights Week. As
soon as we get more information we will let you know. When his parents were murdered, he and his
sister survived, and he became the youngest senator in Oklahoma.
FACEBOOK: We are having an issue with a Facebook account that is using the Parents Of Murdered
Children’s name as a group who chats with each other and puts posts on this account. First of all, they
are using National POMC’s name and we have asked them to change this Facebook account to another
name. Secondly, they are using National’s forms for our various programs and they are very
disrespectful in the way they talk to each other. Some of our members have become “admins” for this
account thinking they are helping POMC and it is not National POMC’s Facebook account. National
POMC does have a Facebook account, but we only post from the National Office and no one else can
post to this Facebook account. We have contacted Facebook and we were told copyright does not
protect our name under their guidelines. We have reached out to the “admins” with no success on
changing their name. We have contacted our attorney and she has sent a Cease and Desist Letter which
they have not paid attention to, so our next step is legal action. Unfortunately, this Facebook account
which is using National POMC’s name, has given the official Parents Of Murdered Children account a
reputation of not being respectful to other survivors, which in turn causes phone calls to the National
Office complaining about the disrespect and how they have been treated from some of the persons
writing on this account. These “admins” are acting like representatives of POMC and are not true
representatives of ours.

National Crime Victims' Rights Week
(April 8 – 14, 2018)
This month is once again National Crime Victims' Rights Week all over our nation. This
year's theme is "Expand the Circle…Reach all Victims" as we face more and different crimes
such as what technology has brought, funding cuts in state budgets, and a changing world in
general. Nearly 50% of crime is not even reported and only a fraction of victims actually receive
the help they need. While we have come a long way in the field of crime victims' rights, we
need to remember always how far we still need to go and strive to improve things for all victims.
The Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) reports that 5 million violent crimes occur in the U.S.
each year. Violence hurts you and your community. Crime victims suffer a range of health
issues, both mental and physical. You are not alone. The aftermath of crime may feel
overwhelming. You have rights and options and may qualify for financial reimbursement
through Crime Victim Compensation. Support is available through VictimConnect.org or call
855-4-VICTIM.
Our organization, Parents Of Murdered Children, supports the push again for an amendment to
the constitution for Crime Victims' Rights. There are already provisions within it for the
defendant/criminals rights but nothing for the victims. When we come to you requesting letters
or emails or phone calls to your senators and congressmen or women please support it. Take the
time and let your voices be heard and join us in the battle for the rights of crime victims that
began more than thirty years ago and will continue until all victims are treated with dignity and
respect and provided the necessary services they need to heal and rebuild their lives.
“Justice will only be achieved when those who are not injured by crime, feel as indignant as
those who are.”
Solomon (635-577 B.C.)

THE COURAGE TO GRIEVE (A Weekend of Hope and Healing in the Pines)
April 27 – 29, 2018, in beautiful PINE, ARIZONA
Our chapter is hosting our twenty-ninth, self-help, rewarding weekend of the courage to grieve,
to face the many overwhelming and difficult emotions that are the aftermath of murder and are
often compounded by the intrusion and frustration of the judicial process. Beneath the explosive
emotions of rage, hate, and revenge lay the more primary feelings of pain, fear, and helplessness.
Unresolved, these emotions can cause survivors to feel they are losing their minds. The isolation
survivors feel from those who will not or cannot deal with the impact of the loss, leave survivors
alone with their grief or discourage them from grieving at all. An integral part of this weekend will
be an examination of love, tenderness and affection, relaxation techniques, and the encouragement
to move forward, uncover and experience within a safe environment with others who truly
understand. The retreat has been designed to influence the reconstruction of a new life - a life that
has a renewed sense of purpose, though forever changed by murder.
The weekend begins with dinner on Friday night. Those attending will all meet at the cabin in
Pine, at 5:00 p.m., with introductions to the group. This cabin was purchased by Roger and Carol
Fornoff specifically for retreats. Their daughter, Christy Ann, was killed in Tempe, in 1984, while
collecting money for her newspaper delivery route. Our chapter has hosted 28 retreats at the
Fornoff’s cabin in the beautiful and peaceful pines surrounding it.
The retreat cost is no charge to our families as we obtain grant funds. Meals are home-cooked
and served family style as if you were at home. Roger is a very good cook and he loves doing so.
Space is limited to a maximum of 17, so reserve your spot now. *While no charge to attend, we do
need a deposit of $25 (per person attending/cash or check, please), which will be refunded to you
after your participation that weekend.
Many of those who have attended the weekend retreats will tell you, though it is hard emotional
work, it is very beneficial and rewarding. Husbands and wives, siblings, all family members should
attend together and learn that while we each grieve differently and had our own relationship with
our loved ones, we all share the pain and the trauma of losing a loved one to murder.
Please sign me up for the grief retreat in Pine. Deposit - $25 (cash or check only)

POETRY PAGE On Another's Sorrow
(by William Blake)
Can I see another's woe,
And not be in sorrow too?
Can I see another's grief,
And not seek for kind relief?
Can I see a falling tear,
And not feel my sorrow's share?
Can a father see his child weep,
Nor be with sorrow filled?
Can a mother sit and hear an infant groan,
an infant fear?
No, no! Never can it be!
Never, never can it be!
And can He who smiles on all
Hear the wren with sorrows small,
Hear the small bird's grief and care,
Hear the woes the infants bare
And not sit beside the next,
Pouring pity in their breast,
And not sit the cradle near,
Weeping tear on infant's tear?
And not sit both night and day,
Wiping all our tears away?
Oh no! Never can it be!
Never, never can it be!
He doth give his joy to all:
He becomes the infant small,
He becomes a man of woe,
He doth feel the sorrow too.
Think not thou canst sigh a sigh,
And thy Maker is not near,
Think not thou canst weep a tear,
And thy Maker is not by.
Oh, He gives to us his joy,
That our grief He may destroy:
Till our grief is fled and gone
He doth sit by us and moan.

LIFE GOES ON By Cheryl McDonald
It’s true what they say, when a child is born,
A mother’s heart is no longer her own.
It runs and skips and giggles and grins,
And crawls in her lap, for a kiss on the chin.
But where goes her heart, when that child is gone?
Five thousand, eight hundred, forty-four days, and the clock ticks;
Sixteen years; one hundred ninety-two months; take your pick.
Does the passage of time mean it should make sense?
Can loss be measured in time increments?
As I yearn for the day when I’ll again see my son,
Is it true what they say, that life goes on?
I still breathe in and out and arise every day.
And work, and struggle, and yes, even play.
Things will get better, I’ve been told many times.
But “different” is the status for those left behind.
Time can’t heal all wounds nor break all bonds.
Can it be true what they say, that life goes on?
In the air and wind, I feel your strong embrace,
And your kisses from butterflies that land on my face.
I see your smile in the beams of the sun:
The twinkle of your eyes now shines in Eden.
And I hear your laugh in the lyrics of songs;
Is it possibly true, that life goes on?
It’s strange to think that pieces of your heart still beat
Inside some strangers whom I’ll never meet.
Do they know they carry these pieces from a heart of gold?
From my sweet boy, who will never grow old?
So many lives saved by your own.
Yes, it’s true what they say, that life goes on.
