Devotions
Living the Paschal Mystery
Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 6 & 7, 2016
The final line of this gospel is most demanding and directly applica-
ble to our daily paschal mystery living: “Much will be required of
the person entrusted with much,/ and still more will be demanded of
the person entrusted with more.” We’ve been entrusted with much:
furthering Jesus’ mission of bringing the Good News of salvation to
all as his disciples. We have been entrusted with even more: we are
not simply servants, but because of our baptism and being plunged
into the paschal mystery we become members of the Body of Christ.
We followers of Jesus are most vigilant for the master, that is, Jesus
himself, we are being who the Master is because his Life has been
given to us. We are to be the presence of the Master himself, contin-
uing his gracious ministry on behalf of others. Our faithfulness is
measured by even more than doing God’s will; it is measured by our
being the presence of the risen Christ for all those we meet. Any
doing must flow from our being. Only then do we truly continue
Jesus’ ministry.
The real surprise of the gospel is that we ourselves, in our daily pas-
chal mystery living of dying to ourselves for the sake of others, be-
come more perfectly that presence of the very Master for whom we
are vigilant. In a sense our vigilance is less about looking for Some-
one and more about being Someone. Our vigilance is for our own
faithfulness. If we are preoccupied by possessions, schedules, work,
sports, entertainment, and so forth, our hearts are already filled with
exhaustible, insecure, and corruptible matters. The challenge of this
gospel is to redirect our hearts to what is our true treasure, Jesus, and
then be faithful disciples. The gift is great. Our treasure is Jesus.

Diocese News Are you Being Called to God? Today’s second reading reminds us that “by faith Abraham obeyed
when he was called.” Sometime we have an inkling that God might
be calling us to something, but we’re either afraid or we’ve already
decided that we want something else. In the end, though, how can
we really find satisfaction or fulfillment unless we’re doing what
God created us to do? Are you being called to priesthood or reli-
gious life? If you think so, be not afraid – let’s try to listen more
clearly for God’s gentle voice. Call or write Father Norm Carroll,
Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-
3113, vocations@cdow.org). And be sure to visit our website:

Marriage Moments Natural or national disasters can bring out the best in humanity
as we rally to help those in need. A marriage crisis can also prompt a
couple to sacrifice for each other or honestly deal with a recurring
problem. Don't wait for a disaster, however, to test your love. Pre-
vention is better.
Parenting Pointers The weather this summer has been confusing at best. Whether
it's been wetter or dryer, hotter or colder, in your part of this vast
world, take advantage of whatever weather you have. Do silly things
like walk in the rain, make mud pies, build sand castles, bundle up
in blankets... Unusual experiences are memories that stick.
The Cathedral of Saint Peter is

nance and preservation of the Cathe-
dral of Saint Peter will be taken up in
all parishes in our diocese. Please be
as generous as you can. For more information, including a letter

and a video tour of the Cathedral, go to www.cdow.org.

In the Gospel this week, Jesus reminds us to be watchful,
and to remember the reward awaiting us. We can be
watchful by living in a moral and obedient way. Bring It
Home by asking each family member, “If Jesus came to the door
today, would you (and He) be pleased with your actions and choic-
es?” What can you do this week to be a watchful Christian witness?
Pray more, seek or give forgiveness, or do something kind and lov-
ing?
