JUNG Architecture Talks
Speakers 2006 – 2019 in chronological order
PAST. PRESENT. FUTURE.
The term “series” is employed in various contexts, e.g. a television series or series of publi-
cations. Even in nuclear physics and geology “series” has its proper significance. With the
adjective “serial”, “series” is increasingly used also in the context of contemporary architec-
ture, at best resulting from a clear vision and eventually becoming a tradition simply
because it is successful. Another series: the JUNG Architecture Talks. For 15 years JUNG
provides with its series of events a platform for debates on current architecture topics in
Germany and Austria, for two years now in Singapore and for the first time also in Seoul
in 2019. Set up in 2006 with the intention to provide a space for discussions about current
challenges and innovations, trends and future-oriented ideas around architecture, JUNG
already invites for the 15th year start-up architecture firms and internationally active
architects to share its experiences.
This edition of PAST. PRESENT. FUTURE. is about the series of eleven JUNG Architecture Talks
2019. Ten different topics – from 100 YEARS BAUHAUS via EVER GREEN and MODULAR +
RELIABLE up to GENIAL DIGITAL – outline key issues of modern architecture.
The JUNG Architecture Talks will be continued also in 2020. Stay with us, such a series is
only possible with your precious cooperation!

“Bauhaus was a sounding board – for a lot and very
different but also contrary ideas.”
A sounding board whose designs and architecture are
omnipresent to this day, viewed by many as brilliant
and truly unique and rejected by others who are not
convinced. Bauhaus was and still is trail-blazing, still
surprises by its consequential style and ideals as well
as the hopes attached with it – on which the biggest
fans and fiercest critics will probably agree or at least
converge. A good reason for inviting, on the occasion of
“100 Years Bauhaus”, together with the German architec-
ture magazine Detail, to the JUNG Architecture Talks, held
for the first time in Weimar. Spela Videcnik talked about
how Bauhaus influenced her architectural training in
Ljubljana and what it means for her present (working)life.
Werner Frosch talked about how the Bauhaus tradition
is carried on by Henning Larsen and the ideologies
reflected in daily interdisciplinary work. Since its recon-
struction of the Master Houses in Dessau, Bruno Fioretti
Marquez is associated with Bauhaus perhaps like no
other contemporary architecture firm – Prof. José Gutierrez
Marquez outlined a few examples. The three entertaining
talks were followed by Dr. Sandra Hofmeister’s book
presentation “My Bauhaus”.

“Buildings arouse a passion in me if they were developed from the inside out.” The four
winning projects of the HÄUSER AWARD 2019, presented in the framework of the JUNG
Architecture Talks Munich by architecture firms, enthused not only Anne Zuber: This year
the organisers looked for private single family houses transposing the zeitgeist of Bauhaus
and the influence of classical modernism in a remarkable fashion into a present-day set-
ting. The most convincing was by Lyckefors Arkitekter with a modern Swedish house near
Gothenburg. Functional, spacious and yet comfortable, the plain wooden block comes in
classic oxblood red. Corneille Uedingslohmann Architects modernised, restored and
carefully extended at both ends a classic, L-shaped mid-century bungalow in Cologne.
Three slightly overhanging barrel-shaped roofs significantly enhance the particular
aesthetic of the residence. The Maison Cubiste in Paris
was built by Moussafir Architectes Associés on an “urban
residual space” in a green backyard. By skillfully position-
ing three containers, it offers distinct living and open
space. The Trausner / Tschaikner duplex in the Austrian
town of Schärding by LP architektur combines two plain
garden pavilions, taking account of the topography and
vegetation – one for the parents and one for the young,
expanding family.

the last decade excellent building projects were designed to deal with this subject coura-
geously and inquisitively, seriously and decisively. And yet: large cities grow larger every
day, more and more people dream of a city worth working and living in. A persisting great
challenge Prof. Eckhard Gerber, Rudi Scheuermann und Prof. Martin Haas talked about
under the heading EVER GREEN. Newcomer Hendrik Brinkmann opened, with his winning
project of the YTAA 2018, a concept for the Academy of Architecture by Karl Friedrich
Schinkel, the Berlin JUNG Architecture Talks hosted by Kristien Ring.
“‘Green Building Envelope’ does not signify that everything has to be green, but rather an
infrastructure element offering so much more than mere technology.” Green spaces in the
urban environment contribute significantly to our well-being worldwide – and are indis-
pensable for the modern urban lifestyle. On rooftops, in open spaces and on facades
plants improve the urban climate, can save on heating and air-conditioning costs and
produce fresh air. They regenerate and contribute to biodiversity. Parks, gardens, urban
green spaces, forest areas, play- and sportsgrounds, street greening and bio facades –
diverse and unconventional, are new ways to make our cities greener. Especially during

“I would like a house in the style of ‘Mies van der Koolhaas’.” Indisputably, for decades Mies
van der Rohe took a stand on contemporary architecture, just as Rem Koolhaas – both as
theorist and executing architect. Taking a stand implies a clear vision and mission, is
courageous and often not only breaks new ground but also breaks with conventions –
essential qualities to construct trendsetting buildings in contemporary architecture based
on e.g. new ways of thinking, diverting materials for other purposes or pushing available
technologies to the limits.
For Elisabeth Endres the question is: “HighTech – LowTech or simply robust?!”, Aleksandra
Gleich’s life is divided between architecture and jurisprudence, Alexander Poetzsch
debunked founding myths in his architecture firm, Nic Rünzi’s projects are characterised by
a stringent choice of materials and simple, carefully considered details, and Christian
Stiller was born into architecture – five young male and female architects; five individuals
with fresh ideas adopting POSITIONS on contemporary architecture on the occasion of
the JUNG Architecture Talks in the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, hosted by Dr. Uwe Bresan.

“Travelling frequently opens up fantasy
worlds which can be implemented into
architecture.” (Ludwig Eith, Architekturforum Freiburg e.V.)
“Travelling frequently opens up fantasy worlds which can be implemented into architec-
ture.” But how much fantasy is allowed in “serial construction”? Rigid building concepts
seem obsolete in many places; joining standardised modules together or stacking them
is in however. Positive aspects of modular architecture are efficient production, short
construction time and opting for “tried and tested” solutions.. Flexible floor plans are
however possible; in addition they may be adapted to changing lifestyles due to modular
construction methods. On the other hand, there are issues like: Is this construction method
indeed cheaper – and reliable? How much leeway is there for individuality and uniqueness
in serial construction? And to what extent can onsite conditions be taken into account
consistently?
How architects can meet high design standards in this balancing act, was demonstrated
by the speakers of the three JUNG Architecture Talks on the subject MODULAR + RELIABLE
in Vienna, Freiburg and Düsseldorf. Andreas Krawczyk, Christian Kaufmann and Matthias
Siegert talked about their experiences during the event moderated by Maik Novotny in
Vienna. Dr. Thomas Welter hosted the evening in Freiburg during which Jens Rannow and
Bernd Gossmann illustrated, by means of their modular planned and completed projects,
the design variety of this quite new construction method. In Düsseldorf Prof. Xaver Egger,
Martin Murphy and once again Andreas Krawczyk debated on MODULAR + RELIABLE;
Boris Schade-Bünsow hosted these 14th JUNG Architecture Talks.

How do you take advantage intelligently of existing buildings by means of new construc-
tion methods, materials and technologies? The 14th JUNG Architecture Talks in Hamburg,
hosted by Dr. Thomas Welter, provided some answers: Torben Østergaard explained by
means of the development of the town of Copenhagen the importance of research in
architecture. Axel Koschany argued in favour of ambitious individual serial architecture.
The evolution of aviation, the automobile industry and urban development of e.g. the
town of Düsseldorf served Matthias Pfeifer as a basis for a comparison to the develop-
ment of digitalisation in architecture. Further considerations and answers were addressed
in the subsequent panel discussion in which Fabian Viehring also participated.
“Modular and serial construction is no panacea.” “How
will we live together?” will be the title of the Architecture
Biennale 2020 in Venice. Increasingly, established modu-
lar architecture provides an initial response amidst social
challenges, e.g. demographic-technological change, cli-
mate change and shortage of resources. Especially with
a view to the future, it is considered an asset in sustaina-
ble and efficient, cost-effective and flexible construction.
But what else lies ahead for architecture in the future?

“I love existing buildings with an eventful history and thus
societal relevance whose history we, as architects, can
pass on.”
How much can the past influence the architecture of
tomorrow or in other words: What does it take to preserve
ancient buildings and build new ones? Hardly any other
medium interacts with people more by its narrative
power than buildings. Future architecture must be flexi-
ble, sustainable and inventive. In any event, visionary
construction also always harks back to the past. The
memory of buildings and cities – their development his-
tory – is of architectonic and historic importance. Built
heritage is knowledge and requires care and respect in
the context of creating present and future new identities.
Therefore, it is essential to treat built heritage sensitively
and responsibly. It narrates our origins and conveys our
understanding of who we are today. It helps to get a
feeling of the site, an identity for a community. Singa-
pore’s striking buildings reflect beautifully the develop-
ment of a nation grown-up – with a defining history
towards a future worth living in. For the second time, the
JUNG Architecture Talks took place in Singapore. Hao
Dong, Stephan Schütz and Ho Weng Hin talked about
and discussed the meaning of the past for tomorrow’s
architecture, hosted by Martin Teo.

“I consider it a great success – and good fortune – to work with people who share
my vision.” Constructing the “Omniturm”, the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and Bollinger +
Grohmann Engineers shared the same vision with Tishmann Speyer. The Omniturm is an
exemplary occupancy mix of architecture: Reside where you live. Live where you work. The
new high-rise building with the “Mediterranean hip-swing” combines living and working
floors with public areas in urban space. The Omniturm is a perfect example of dealing
with global trends like urbanisation, densification and mixed use and implementing a
sustainable architecture concept in the heart of the Frankfurt banking district. There were
however numerous challenges to overcome before completion. Florian Reiff of Tishman
Speyer outlined the difficulties in designing the living area of the architectonic occupancy
mix. Conventional areas for living, leisure, work, parking and shopping were combined in
BIG’s design and merged into a pragmatic utopian architecture. Kai Uwe Bergmann
talked about the special features of the high-rise building with the “Mediterranean hip-
swing” in the German landscape. Prof. Manfred Grohmann provided insights into the work
of the engineers: Due to the shifted basement and living floors on the vertical plane, the
experts were facing diverse problems. Boris Schade-Bünsow hosted the evening.

“We have developed so many energy-guzzling technolo-
gies during the last century that we do not have another
century to rectify these mistakes.” Technological develop-
ments are fast-paced and more than ever change how
we communicate and consume – how we build and ulti-
mately how we live. BEYOND SMART was the title of the
first JUNG Architecture Talks in Seoul, which is not surpris-
ing as South Korea is considered the country of “tech-
nolo gy products”. The focus was on issues like: Can you
create new designs through new technologies? Or the
other way round: Do technical innovations encourage
rethinking as regards design, in view of adaptations to be implemented to maintain our
habitat worthwhile to live in – with future generations in mind and thus act sustainably
because also architecture interacts with technology. Nowadays it is not uncommon to
play a decisive role in the implementation of an architectonic concept and the exchange
between architects and their building partners.
Rudi Scheuermann, Tony Armstrong and Cord-Hinrich Grote talked about various possi-
ble symbiosis of technology and design at the JUNG Architecture Talks in Seoul hosted by
Peter Cachola Schmal. “Healthy buildings” and such promoting human health were
discussed as well as high-quality and stable value facade cladding material, respectively
green facades.

“Architects should be more extrovert. At univer-
sity we are trained to become autistic people
who are good at languages. We work on plans,
display and abstract. But we should listen and
communicate more.” (Alexander Poetzsch, ALEXANDER POETZSCH ARCHITEKTEN)
On the occasion of the Bauhaus centenary, JUNG invited,
in partnership with the Mies van der Rohe Foundation
(Fundació Mies van der Rohe, Barcelona), on 3 October
2019, to the “Bauhaus Today” conference in the epochal
Barcelona Pavilion. In renewed partnership with the
Young Talent Architecture Awards, the European prize for
architecture students, this invitation targeted especially
young, aspiring architects. These are only three examples
of numerous JUNG promotions and cooperations to
support young designers, planners and architects with
the aim to develop a close, trusting partnership and the
realisation of common visions for a future worth living
in for future generations also.
Promotion of young architects
“Architects should be more extrovert. At university we are trained to become autistic peo-
ple who are good at languages. We work on plans, display and abstract. But we should
listen and communicate more.” In the framework of the JUNG Architecture Talks young
architects get the chance to express themselves regularly about their way of thinking,
prospects, approaches, and, of course, to present their first projects.
The two-part project series “Renovation of the City Palace Wiehe” in Thuringia offered
students of the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt the possibility to develop their concept
“Musterzimmer#.02” in a listed existing building as an extension of their Bachelor’s thesis.
The objective was to create single or twin rooms with adjacent bathrooms as part of an
overall hotel concept. JUNG sponsored the material for both project phases.
Active Partnerships

JUNG goes Milano
JUNG’s interior design installation C H R O M A T I C attracted numerous curious visitors in
the framework of the Milan Design Week 2019 in the heart of the pulsating Brera Design
District. In the rooms of a ballet school JUNG offered visitors a multi-optional experience
appealing to all their senses: Purism and chrome of the LS 1912 and LS 990 switch universe
set the pace and put the visitor into a haptic and acoustic trance. The installation con-
ceived by by the design studio raumkontor Düsseldorf Düsseldorf, equipped with objects
by Oskar Zieta, combined the architectural power of JUNG switch icons to offer an omni-
present sensual experience. The overall interior design experiment combined the surreal
of the design cosmos Brera with the haptics of new realities. At the same venue JUNG
again invites to the Milan Design Week 2020 for a special event.

Vitra Design Museum Exhibition
German Pavilion Architecture Biennale
From February through August 2020, the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein will host
a large exhibition on contemporary private interior – and its particularities. The exhibition
takes visitors on a journey back in time. A fascinating narrative sheds light on the multifac-
eted interiors of the last 100 years, decade by decade. “Home Stories” presents iconic
interiors designed by architects like Le Corbusier, Finn Juhl or Claude Parent, artists like
Andy Warhol as well as interior designers like Elsie de Wolfe and Cecil Beaton. Design- and
art objects, architecture models, installations, plans, drawings, photographs, books, films
and other media take you on a sensory journey through the last decades of private resi-
dences. Subtle, contrasting or setting priorities: In the framework of the exhibition, JUNG
presents its design classic LS 990 in a selection of 63 original Les Couleurs® Le Corbusier
colours. JUNG cordially invites you to the exhibition “Home Stories”. Our “Architecture
Busses” will take you to the Vitra Campus on fixed dates. Further information on JUNG
events will be published in March 2020.

„How will we live together?” is the title of the Architecture Biennale
2020 in Venice, for JUNG a central issue – global as well as regional.
Everywhere architecture is required for a generous co-existence,
rooms allowing individualisation at the same time as digital and real
proximity; buildings adapted to the environment and its characteris-
tics, without ever being boring, and promoting cross-cultural social
interaction. That our environment needs to be protected and exist-
ing resources used wisely need no longer be emphasised. Intelligent
architecture requires JUNG to seriously consider these essential
aspects and eventually respect them meticulously in the implemen-
tation, not least one of the reasons why JUNG organises the JUNG
Architecture Talks internationally as a platform for 15 years now to
deal in-depth with such issues. Furthermore, JUNG has been active
for many years worldwide, has close partners in the areas of archi-
tecture, planning and handicraft and never ceases to support sus-
tainable and future-oriented architectural design. Obviously, there
is a close and continuous exchange with the Bund Deutscher
Architekten (BDA) – also in the framework of the 17th Architecture
Biennale in Venice. Hence, JUNG again organises the BDA gala
launching the international architecture exhibition in 2020.

BIM JUNG AR-Studio
The building trade increasingly favours digital processing, e.g. by BIM. “Digital building” is
the slogan of this kind of project management and implementation, which is still relatively
novel. And yet: BIM has already transformed the building trade with its tools and facilitates
the smooth digitalisation of all processes for architects and planners – from the planning
stage up to implementation. JUNG actively supports its architecture and planning part-
ners by using the latest technologies and providing its products as free of charge BIM
objects for ArchiCAD and Revit® in different degrees of detail. JUNG’s BIM objects include
storing all product features relevant for the planning such as materiality, measurements
and performance characteristics. The selected frameworks and applications can be
flexibly compiled as product combinations and are provided in the software as a com-
plete object. A program-internal logic check does not exclude non-compatible combina-
tions right away. The software allows the generation of precise quantities and order lists.
Detailed information on JUNG’s BIM solutions can be found in the service section of the
JUNG website under “JUNG goes BIM”.
Experience and plan JUNG AR-Studio JUNG digitally: The free-of-charge JUNG App AR-
Studio is a creative planning tool for contractors, renovators, planners and architects, with
which JUNG products to be shown virtually in rooms. Surfaces, materials and colours can
be viewed photo-realistically. Users of the new app can view JUNG switch programmes
and, at any time and anywhere, optimally display various materials and colours in the
room. The perfect interior concept is then only a few steps away.
Simply choose in the app a switch programme, material and colour and then affix the
JUNG experience marker at the spot where the switch should be shown. The app now
adds virtual 3D models of the JUNG products to the live picture of the rooms. You can see
instantly on the tablet or smartphone how the switch is shown to advantage in the room
and next to the interior. Trying out diverse framework designs, the effect of different metal
variants – from aluminum via stainless steel up to brass – can be experienced photo-real-
istically just as the 63 colours of the colour range of Les Couleurs® Le Corbusier, exclusively
provided by JUNG.
