Europeana builds on three layers of information:

Europeana Data Exchange Agreement - provisions for previews

You are encouraged to to provide Previews together with your metadata (not required)

If you provide previews Europeana is entitled to publish them alongside search results.

The previews do not fall under the CC0 waiver, instead they can be used according to the rights statement in edm:rights

Europeana will publish the URL of the preview via the API as Linked Open Data. If you are not comfortable with this you can opt out of this.

You need to provide your metadata in line with the Europeana Data Model

You can decide how much metadata you provideAll metadata provided to Europeana will be published under

the terms of the Creative Commons Zero Public Domain Dedication, and can be used free from restrictions

Europeana will always give you attribution Europeana will always publish a link to the Europeana Data

Use GuidelinesYou can request Europeana to remove metadata or update it

End user terms: CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication:

The CC0 Public Domain Dedication 1.0 Universal has three layers:

Layer #3: a promise not to exercise

Layer #2: a free license without any restrictions

Layer #1: a waiver of all rights in the licensed work

Subject matter under CC0 can be used without any restrictions in different jurisdictions, as if it was in the Public Domain

Rights information about previews on Europeana:

“With the exception of the previews, all data available on europeana.eu is available free of restrictions under the terms of the Creative

Commons Zero Public Domain Dedication. If you reuse metadata from Europeana, please follow the Europeana Data Use Guidelines. Previews can only be used in accordance

with the rights information displayed next to them.”
