Class 2.5 of the PDC+++¿How do we ensure optimal resource use & best choice of materials, interventions & technologies? This is something so basic that it is quite common to fall into old habits, simply copy what others have done or (even worse) use the materials 'we like', those we are familiar with, or technologies we find pleasant instead of those which do, in fact, best fit the criteria of sustainability.

In this class we look at the importance & thinking behind the hierarchy of resources & the scale of interventions, two tools amongst various which we use to ground our designs.

The objective is to create systems that are ecologically sustainable, economically viable, that satisfy needs, don't exploit or contaminate & that are self-sufficient in the longer-term.

Suggestions for your Design Make a sketch of your habitual design PROCESS

(e.g.. of the last thing you designed)

Observe how it differs from the Design Frameworks (shown in class M2.4)

Analyze your Design Motivations (see class M2.3) & if it fits well with your Vision & Mission

Are there other designs that could represent a better use of resources (that YOU control) for sustainability?

Make a list of the various designs you could make (a brainstorming) & then a PMI analysis of each one.

• Present this in your Design Portfolio!

Review

PermaCulture?Definition of the scientific method:

“A systematic method of investigation for the knowing of observable reality,

that consists in formulating inquiries about that reality,

trying to find solutions to the problems in question.”

Action Learning

What type of solutions?

Is it a Science?

Steps of the Scientific Method

•4. Experimentation

• 2. Hypothesis (a model) > Theory

• 1. Observation

• 3. Prediction

Steps in the Design Cycletrying to find solutions to the problems in question

1. Observe (discover)

2. Think (dream)

3. Design -> Sustainable Systems4. Do / Create / Start up (deliver)

1. Observe Results.. Re-design

Design Process A VERY DYNAMIC PROCESS

& never "finished" – all are designs in development

Doing Presentations

A basic & important skill

An Essential part of Facilitating

Speaking in public is fun!

Expressing ideas clearly is interesting

Convincing others is very useful

DESIGN your presentation

PRACTICE, practice, Practice!

Provide a good answer to the basic questions:

What Who How

WhereWhen

& Why

Try impersonating a "sustainability

detective"

Investigation cycle

Yo don't know That you know(unconsciousness)

You know That you don't know(consciousness)

You investigate or ask(in-form-ation)

use / apply the information(ACTION)

PROBLEM to solve

I had 6 Humble servants that taught me everything I know

They are What, Who, How, Where, When and Why
