PETER DRUCKER AND HIS CONTRIBUTIONS

INTRODUCTION

Peter Drucker (born 1909) is known as the father of modern management.

A prolific writer, business consultant, self-described “social ecologist”, and lecturer.

His writings have predicted many of the major developments.

In 1959, Drucker coined the term “knowledge worker.”

He introduced many management concepts that have been embraced by corporations around the world.

His career as a business thinker took off in 1942.

Drucker taught that management is “a liberal art”.

He infused his management advice with interdisciplinary lessons from history, sociology, psychology, philosophy, culture and religion .

Drucker, believed strongly that all institutions, including those in the private sector, have a responsibility to the whole of society.

He was interested in the growing effect of people who worked with their minds rather than their hands.

Drucker claimed that an industrial society allows people to achieve their dreams of personal achievement and equality of opportunity .

He introduced previously unknown concepts such as cooperation between labor and management, decentralization of management, and viewing workers as resources rather than costs.

IDEAS TOWARDS MANAGEMENT

A profound skepticism about macroeconomic theory.

Management by objectives.

Company's primary responsibility .

A desire to make everything as simple as possible .

A belief in what he called "the sickness of government."

The need for "planned abandonment."

The lasting contribution of the "father of scientific management", Frederick Winslow Taylor.

The need for community.

CONTRIBUTIONS

•His emphasis upon the results of managerial actions rather than the supervision of activities was a major contribution.•For it shifted the entire focus of management thought to productivity-output-and away from work efforts-input .

He said,

“I demand in every organization in which I have anything to say that managers start with these questions: What contribution can this institution hold you accountable for? What results should you be responsible for? And then ask, 'What authority do you then need?' This is the way to build a performing institution. “

Drucker wrote about social, political and economic changes of the "postcapitalist" era.

Which he says are as profound as those of the industrial revolution.

Drucker discussed the emergence of the "knowledge worker“.

Drucker foresaw the effects of technology on business .

The credit for developing MBO(Management by Objectives) goes to Peter Drucker.

AWARDS

Drucker was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by U.S. President George W. Bush on July 9, 2002.

HONOURS Drucker was the Honorary Chairman of the Peter

F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management, now the Leader to Leader Institute, from 1990 through 2002.

In 1969 he was awarded NYU’s highest honor, the NYU Presidential Citation.

Inducted into the Junior Achievement U.S. Business Hall of Fame in 1996.

Holds 25 honorary doctorates from American, Belgian, Czech, English, Spanish and Swiss Universities.

Criticism .

Drucker wasn’t immune to criticism.

Critics stated that MBO is difficult to implement, and that companies often wind up overemphasizing control, as opposed to fostering creativity, to meet its goals.

CONCLUSION

Drucker is the person who has gifted a lot of milestones to the field of management. He coined the principle of Management By Objectives in his book “The Practice of Management”. This principle is boon to the world of management as to the fact that it exists even in this 21st century many organizations follow it deeply. In our personal view ,we deeply adore him for his contributions made to the world of management. And we, to become a good managers would take this as a privilege to imbibe within us his concepts and contributions to the world of management.
