National Press Photographers Association Code of Ethics

• Editing should maintain the integrity of the photographic images' content and context.

• Do not manipulate images or add or alter sound in any way that can mislead viewers or misrepresent subjects.

John Long, The Hartford CourantEthics Chair, NPPA

• “It is tempting to want to correct a flaw in an otherwise significant photograph, but whether it is done by photographer, editor or lab tech, once a ‘moment’ has been captured on film or on digital media, we no longer have the right to change that image in any way except for minor dodging, burning or cropping.”

Toledo Blade, 2007

From the correction:

“The Blade’s policy is to never alter photographs, and the newspaper regrets the incident and apologizes to readers.”
