• Born February 25,1841• The son of a tailor and a seamstress• Sought out commissions for portraits and

depended on kindness of his friends, mentors, and patrons

• Studied works of Raphael, Velazquez, and Rubens to develop a more traditional style on a trip to Italy in 1881

• Was the leader of Impressionism

Artistic Style

• He used techniques such as use of bright colors, light-hearted subjects, and bold lines

• Developed new techniques that defined movement; portrayed with sincere compositions and vivid colors

• He is known for his pleasant paintings a love of the female figure

• His subjects shifted from contemporary themes to more timeless themes ; particularly nude figures
