Importance of GrassrootsMovements
By: Eric AndersonCurrently in our nation, the power of grass-
roots movements is incredibly underrated. When itcomes to motivating political change, grassroots
efforts are often overlooked in favor of media cam- paigns or exorbitant political donations. Conventionalthought tells us that the power of established politicalfigures and fundraisers dwarfs the potential influenceof a large group of motivated individuals. While thisseemingly overwhelming school of thought appearsto dominate the national consciousness, it hasntstopped grassroots movements from being as preva-lent and effective as ever. In fact, grassroots effortsand organizations are producing some of the purest, most genuine displays of political expressions we seein society. From politics at the federal level all theway down to decisions made by local bodies of gov-ernment, the motivation to strive for political idealsand principles is still able to unite citizens. However, the power of grassroots movements is not definedsolely by their ability to bring people together. Theyare defined by what this group of like -minded indi-viduals can accomplish when working together. Those involved in grassroots activities constitute thefoundation of the politically aware populace. These
people are willing to come together and sacrifice for their principles, work together as equals for a greater common cause, and triumph together when their col-lective dynamism is realized as a force to be reck-oned with. Grassroots can come in all shapes and siz-es. They can be found in established organizationsand friendly social circles. While they share no onecharacteristic, all grassroots efforts do share onething: they are all capable of producing changethanks to the genuine devotion of those who com-
prise the movement. This unaffected authenticitymakes grassroots efforts so unique, and that is whythey are so powerful.
