To build the cube as fast as you can.

Objective

• You may not break pieces of the cube.• You may not mark the cube in any way.• You have 25 minutes to prepare your solution before we test you under

trial conditions.• The team with the fastest time under trial conditions will win.

Ground Rules

• Your cube will be scattered in a random way on the surface indicated.

• If you touch a piece before we say go, you will be disqualified. We will be strict on this rule.

• Pieces include the lid and box.• All cubes must contain 7 different pieces correctly formed as a

cube. • Time will stop when the team puts the lid on the cube.

• You get three attempts.

Trial Condition Rules

Out of the Box

• Under 10 seconds – Very average• Under 8 seconds – Good• Under 6 seconds – Excellent / World Class• Under 5 seconds – Best of Breed• The World Record 4.2 seconds currently held by McKinsey & Co.• This simulation has been run over 2,600 times.

World Class Benchmarks

Out of the Box

Some Review Points:• How to put it together: best suited for an individual to solve – it is a

spatial problem with 6 options• Then what is the fastest way to build it guaranteed under trial conditions?

Team task – but how:• Sequentially by a team.• Individual builder but team hands pieces.• Sub-assemblies with final fabrication.• Super team by amalgamating team with the best spatial experts.• Trial condition – “ready, steady, go!”..... is vital to rehearse to avoid

disqualifications• Continuous improvement – did you time out and learn from analysis or

trial and error?• One of the six orientations gives the fastest time – did you try more than

one orientation?• How much time did you focus on other teams and investigating best

ideas?
