The ProblemAlthough a great deal of effort has been put into the design and construction of stormwater control ponds, little consideration has been given to the long-term maintenance of these important structures.

SolutionsMake pond owners aware of the necessity to

maintain their pondsConduct regular inspections of ponds and

contact owners not in compliance with regulations

Take regulatory enforcement actions, if necessary

Partner with local businesses to foster awareness of and compliance with regulations

Regulatory RequirementsIf the pond is required to have a fence around

it, make sure it is locked and in good condition

Keep vegetation in and around the pond well groomed and under control; there should be no tall weeds, bushes, or trees in the pond or on its banks

Make sure inlet and outlet structures flow freely and are kept clear of debris

Keep the pond free of trash and debrisEnsure that the pond banks, berms, and
