The Challenge Attention aspiring engineers! The state of

Michigan needs your help. The Mackinaw Bridge is beginning to deteriorate and a new bridge must be built. Governor Granholm wants the most qualified team of builders to oversee the design and construction of the new bridge. Governor Granholm has issued a challenge to find the best bridge designers this country has to offer.

The Problem You and a partner must make a bridge out

of popsicle sticks and glue.

The bridge must be able to span a 16 inch gap.

The bridge must be able to hold the most amount of weight possible.

Rules 1. The bridge can only be made out of 120 popsicle sticks and

white glue.

2. The bridge can be no longer than 20 inches.

3. The bridge must use trusses to give support and rigidity.

4. The bridge must have two sides, a top and a bottom.

5. The bridge must be at least 4 inches tall and at least 4 inches wide.

6. Popsicle sticks can overlap up to 2 ¼ inches.

Rubric The bridges will be graded using a rubric.

Testing Bridges will be tested until failure.

Each bridge will be loaded at the center using a chain and weight system or bridge tester depending on the semester

The bridge must be able to accommodate the testing apparatus.
