O In this slide show, we’ll look at how these two prepositions are used.

What’s the difference?

OThere is a difference in the way that the objects of the prepositions are perceived.

ORather than give you a long theoretical explanation, I’ll give you an acronym for para: P.E.R.F.E.C.T.

P.E.R.F.E.C.T.O Use PARA when talking about:

O Purpose: “in order to”: used together with an infinitive.

O Effect that something has on something else.

O RecipientO Future dates, deadlines, or eventsO EmploymentO ComparisonO Toward a specific place

Purpose

OPurpose: “in order to”: used together with an infinitive.

OEstudio para sacar buenas notas.

Effect

OEffect that something has on something else.

OVoy a la universidad para ser abogado criminal.

Recipient

ORecipient: the person or entity that receives something:

OEste regalo es para ti.

Future

OFuture dates, deadlines, or events

OEsta tarea es para mañana y el proyecto es para el lunes.

Employment

OEmploymentOTrabajo para un

restaurante chileno.

Comparison

What about ‘por’?

O Essentially, por is used in all instances when P.E.R.F.E.C.T. does not apply.

O However, if you like to collect acronyms, here is one to use with por: A.T.R.A.C.T.E.D

O This acronym covers many, but not all, of the main uses of por. There are many idiomatic expressions that use por.
