FARM HOUSE PROJECT DESIGN INTENT
This design is intended to create a landscape that blends elements of a native Iowa prairie into a 19th century, Victorian-style garden. To accomplish this, a formal garden layout, geometrically-organized “outdoor rooms,” and a colorful palette of grasses and forbs were utilized in the design.
A historic monument of the Iowa State campus, the Farm House Museum was the first building constructed on university grounds in 1860 and served as the temporary living quarters of the college’s first president. While the museum’s architecture has been meticulously maintained and restored over the years, little attention has been paid to the surrounding landscape – resulting in a site that is rather undeveloped and unreflective of its unique history and context. This project sought to re-connect these spaces through a design that appropriately incorporated elements of a 19th century, Midwestern garden.

This design incorporated two important aspects to the clients: their love of vintage blue jeans and their desire to integrate sustainable landscape elements into their outdoor living space. To accomplish both tasks, a monochromatic blue planting scheme was implemented, along with a number of sustainable landscape elements – including permeable pavers, rain barrels, xeriscaping, and native plant selection.

Inspired by the Habitat and Prospect-Refuge theories of landscape design, this proposal is intended to provide areas for shelter and function among the densely-landscaped, natural looking planting beds. Geometric, linear structures are eased into the design by curvilinear bed lines and a plethora of green-hued perennials, grasses, shrubs, and trees . With a balanced mix of hard and soft landscape elements, this design creates an oasis for the Alexander’s to relax and enjoy the scenery while they and watch their children play and explore.

This design was completed for the Weber’s – a young family of four who needed a functional, low maintenance landscape for their newly constructed home and acreage in north Ames, IA. Inspired by the Weber’s love of the outdoors and the prairie surrounding their property, this design features organic, curvilinear bedlines; natural-looking limestone pavers and hardscape materials; and boulders and native prairie flowers throughout the planting beds. A budgeted and phased implementation scheme was included on the plan to give the Weber’s the flexibility to install the design on their own terms.

4 THEMED DESIGN DEVELOPMENT MEDIA USED: Adobe Illustrator
This unique design project focused on the development and implementation of a strong design concept from a randomly assigned “inspiration piece.” The inspiration pieces ranged from high school mascots to comic book series to world-renowned places like the Taj Mahal (my inspiration piece). After conducting research on the history and context in which the “Taj” was constructed, I was especially moved by the passion of the mausoleum's visionary – Shah Jahan. As expressed in his famous quote, the Taj and its surrounding grounds were to be a place of refuge, solemn contemplation, and rejuvenation. My de-sign is centered around these intensions and aims to create a contemporary, “Taj-esque” oasis for a recently retired, Indian-immigrant couple in Orlando, FL. The design features soothing water features; Indian-styled garden sculptures; and a dense, tropical planting scheme - all of which intended to promote escape from stress and mental, physical, and spiritual renewal.

ON WITH LIFE PROJECT OVERVIEW
OWL HEALING GARDEN Ankeny, IA
Due to its large scale and highly specialized set of client needs, the On With Life (OWL) Healing Garden project presented a unique and challenging set of requirements to address. Completed for the patients and staff at the OWL Brain Injury Rehabilitation Center in Ankeny, the main objective of this project was to design a rehabilitative, outdoor garden that could be used for various therapy activities. The final design was achieved by collaborating with a group of two other students in my studio class.

Inspired by the human organ that is at the center of the OWL Brain Injury Center’s mission and focus (the human brain), my group’s healing garden design features many individual garden spaces that stimulate a specific brain area. Paths of varying widths and degrees of difficulty weave throughout the design and connect the main garden areas.

One of the featured areas of the healing garden was the “Tempo-ral Lobe” (the Zen / Music Therapy Garden). Inspired by the tranquility and distinct style of Zen garden design, the Temp-ral Lobe is intended to provide a quiet, soothing space for OWL patients and staff to use for music therapy activities. To accomplish this, the area is designed with dense, evergreen privacy plantings; several water features; music therapy equipment from The Chimes Company ; and a deck leisure area. For the final presentation to the OWL staff and patients, I created a SketchUp walk-through of the Tempo-ral Lobe to give a three-dimensional depiction of the space and demonstrate how patrons might interact with it.

This retaining wall project was completed at my parent’s home in Waverly, IA. After removing a row of overgrown, diseased arborvitae trees, a large space between my parent’s and their neighbor’s properties was re-exposed – eliminating the barrier between the two spaces and leaving behind an unprotected patch of soil. This retaining wall project was completed to address these issues by both eliminating soil erosion into the neighbor’s lawn and creating an aesthetically privacy border between the two properties.

This project was completed for my grandma, Judy Mixsell, who recently sold her home of 20 years and downsized to a small rental property in the downtown Cedar Falls, IA area. An avid gardener and outdoor enthusiast, my grandma was disappointed with the lack of landscaping around her rental home and asked me to create a landscape plan that she could present to her landlord. The following SketchUp designs were created for the north and west sides of the house and incorporated my grandma’s desire for a colorful landscape that meshed well with the house’s trim and accent colors.

An original part of the iconic Memorial Union building, the west plaza area offers a scenic view of Lake LaVerne and serves as a high-traffic area utilized by students, university employees, and campus visitors. As evident in the image , however, this space is currently a barren, “concrete wasteland” with little-to-no amenities that allow pedestrians to sit down or comfortably enjoy a meal from the nearby cafeteria. Through this two-semester, independent study and creative project, I – in collaboration with the Memorial Union director and the Student Society of Landscape Architects (SSLA) – explored how an intensive garden roof might better accommodate for these potential activities.

To capitalize on the high-density of impermeable roof area surrounding the West Plaza area, a rainwater harvesting system was also integrated into the roof garden design. Capable of harvesting and storing up to 3,500 galloons of water, the system would be capable of significantly reducing the amount of runoff from the west plaza site during heavy rainfall events. Rainwater retained by this system would then be re-used o irrigate the roof garden planters and the lawn area north of the Memorial Union.

During the first stage of rainwater harvesting, water is collected in the roof drain above the West Plaza main entrance. Water from the drain then moves to a connected PVC pipe, which transfers it to the planters below.
After the rainwater reaches the planters via the PVC piping, it is then emptied in specially-crafted water reservoirs at the bottom of the planters. Once in the reservoirs, the water continues to be gravity-fed down a sloped surface to an underground water storage tank buried within the NE retaining wall.
The final stage of rainwater collection involves the pumping of rainwater into a 3,500 galloon underground storage tank via a PVC pipe. Once in the tank, the water processed and either pumped back into the landscape to be used for irrigation or released into the stormwater sewage system if the tank exceed the overflow level.

This exercise involved the organizing, designating, and refining of space through the three stages of the landscape design process: the development of the functional diagram, form composition, and finally the preliminary design.
In the form composition phase, the prominent spaces created in the functional diagrams (i.e. – lawn, bed areas, patio, etc.) are given a more definite shape and figure. The two compositions below exhibit how the same spaces can be molded into drastically different, curvilinear or geometric designs.
FORM COMPOSTION STUDY
Drawing from the spaces created in the form composition study, the preliminary design brings the landscape plan to life by incorporating plants, paths, and other miscellaneous details. The design pictured here is a continuation of the geometric, formal design developed in one of the previous form compositions. It utilizes a variety of line weights and detailing techniques, giving depth and interest to the soft and hardscape spaces.

In this exercise, a shrub border was designed for a hypothetical client in order to create a more private environment around their patio. To strengthen the design when viewed from multiple perspectives, a form study, plan view, and elevation drawing were created. By utilizing this multi-step approach, a diversity of of plant heights, forms, and textures were incorporated to create multidimensional interest within the shrub border.

This project entailed creating a 3D landscape design from the plan view design used in the color marker project. SketchUp software was used to model the above house and landscaping for an eco-conscious family in Colorado.
This project involved the line weight development and marker rendering of a pre-determined design. Again, only four Prismacolor markers were used.
