MIDRISE DEVELOPMENT AT WILSHIRE

Set on the corner of Wilshire and Hobart in Los Angeles, this project is a 49 unit,

medium rise housing building. The apart-ment complex consists mostly of live-work

units. Office buildings, schools, theaters and the metro station dominate the area. The courtyard to the northwest is open for the

public to sit, relax, and shop, taking a break from their busy lives. The residential en-

trance leads to the main area of circulation. The circulation paths, located only on the

2nd and 4th floors, run straight through the middle of a split double loaded corridor. A

glass roof runs along the center of the cor-ridor to let in light and wind into the atrium

as well as guide rainwater down the building into a biofilter pond located in the backyard.

CIVIC CENTER AT VENICE BEACH

Venice Beach has plenty of history when it comes to arts and entertainment. However,

visual entertainment is more prominent; the art of music is not as well established as the other arts. To engage the people of

Venice Beach in music, the proposed hybrid program for this community civic center is a music center. This music center includes

several different programs, including an outdoor performance venue, classrooms

for the purpose of music lessons, practice rooms, and a recital hall where students can

perform what they’ve learned.

HOUSING ON SKID ROW

Discovering the difference between transient and permanent domesticity was essential to the development of this project. To create a place of permanance, the walls and ground

are pushed in order to create alcoves of space within each unit. Applying the same idea to the building as a whole, using an infill in between the existing buildings as massing, areas are pushed up in order to

create exterior alcoves of open space.

SKETCHES AND PHOTOGRAPHY

It is important to understand architecture not only through design, but also through

studies using other media. Sketches capture the essence of a building through form and specific details. Photographs are a depiction of a representation of a building

according to its most important parts.
