ASSIGNMENT

Throughout the course, you will be required to complete a se-ries of assignments. Each one is specific to an area discussed in the unit. Review the materials prior to completing the assign-ment. Some will be graded based on the content and submis-sion, and others will be graded based on the submission (pass/fail).

DiscussionsWeekly discussions and critiques are designed to help you analyze and evaluate work, identify strong points and areas that could use improvement. Critiques are meant to help you along in the developmental phase of your process; they should focus on how to solve a problem to develop a design solution. Critiques and discussions should be courteous, and thoughtful. Discussion grades are awarded based on the overall participa-tion and quality.

PortfolioYou will be required to complete, layout, print and assemble a physical portfolio that is targeted toward the audience you tend to view it- perspective colleges, employment or internships in a specialty area, or freelancing. This project will provide you with the unique opportunity to produce a final piece that demon-strates your skills as a designer and a problem solver. Because it doesn't have a specific theme, you will be able to decide what will be best for your portfolio. You will receive feedback on the different stages of the project.

Web SiteYou will be required to create a professional Web site that will serve as your simple online portfolio, showcasing your work and resume. It should provide information about you and a sampling of your work to help a prospective employer decide to make contact. A web site such as this can be a very useful marketing tool to use for your job search.

Your Resume You have probably experienced the process of writing a re-sume, and possibly a cover letter. To take what you have already learned to the next level, we will also consider the "look and feel" of your resume and the possibilities of developing a new one to better target your goals.

Personal BrandingThis is probably the most disregarded part of the package. We tend to work so hard on the tangible parts (the portfolio and resume) that we disregard working on ourselves. It is about identifying who you are and where you want to go. This, in turn, will help you build a strong portfolio and resume. You will be developing a personal logo and style of branding that will be consistent through all of your layouts, from business card, let-terhead, resume, portfolio and website.

Process BookYour project submission must be accompanied by a process book—a scrapbook and journal which details the process by which you developed your designs/solutions. Because files are submitted electronically, you will need to digitize the contents of your process book in PDF format.

VISION AND GOALS STATEMENT

Who am II am a graphic design student. I would say that my strengths are keeping to deadlines and attention to detail. My weaknesses are web design and coding. I know how to design for web but do not particularly enjoy this. What enjoy the most os print and publication design. I love making colors, objects and text work well together to get a point across. There is so much potential in print design.

Branding MeMy style so far I would say is bold, colorful, crisp, young and fresh. Your style as a designer should reflect your personality. All of your work should have some piece of you in it.

Plans After GraduationAfter graduation I would love to work for an ad agency or even a magazine working on layouts and publication design. I would like to see myself working in a successful ad agency making a name for myself as a designer. In five or more years I would ei-ther like to be further up the ladder in an ad agency or magazine or be freelancing or having my own company.

PortfolioI think any designer needs a portfolio to either get a job with a successful company, get accepted into a school or even some-thing to show potential clients what you are capable of. I do not think there is one particular need for a portfolio.

Target AudienceMy target audience would an employer with my secondary target audience being a client of that employer. If you are try-ing to get a job you need them to see your portfolio so they can see what areas you are excel in and if there is a place for you within their company. If you have a job a client would be your audience so that they can see what type of work you have done and whether or not they would like your work. The client needs

to see what you are capable of and if they would like how you have branded yourself.

Area of SpecialtyMy strongest area in graphic design is print and publication design. I would like to pursue a career where attention to detail is key. I think publication design or advertising in the place to be for me. It's what I love doing.I would have to say my weakness is web design. It is not an area that I ever really took to. Coding doesn't interest me much, I like seeing my work coming together as I am doing it right in front of me and I just don't get that same satisfaction with coding and web design as I so in print.

Design ChallengeI think a sleeve or a booklet would be my best choices for my portfolio. I think this is best for me considering that I am trying for a job in print/publication design. If it looks similar to the day to day work I would be doing with an employer it would help give them a better perspective of what I can do and what my finished work looks like in the end.

Objectives My objective is to portfolio that will showcase my best work. It should leave an impression on the potential employer and should ultimately make them want to hire you and have you as a part of their team. The portfolio should also be something that you keep for yourself as an accomplishment of everything that you have done and are capable of. You should be proud of your portfolio because if you are others will be too.

BudgetI think a decent budget would be about $75-$100. You do not need to spend a ton of money, you can make something great out of little. It is you work that speaks volumes.

Lacey WilletteSchool Project12/08/2010This project was taking an actual photo, bring-ing it into photoshop and making it into a com-puter illustration.Digital.This is a finished piece. I am actually satisfied with it. I think my strong points with this is that it really does look like the photo so I am pleased with that. I'd say the one weak point would be that there could be more shading done so that it looks more life like and not just a doll. Other than that I am satisfied overall.

Stamp DesignSchool Project12/15/2010This project was to design a stamp that could actually be reproduced and used.Digital.This is a finished piece. I have to say that I am really satisfied with this. I think it came out better than I had thought it would. To me I don't really see a weak point. I think that overall it is a strong piece, it reads well as a larger image as well as the actual size a stamp would be.

School Project2/24/2010This was a school project where we had to redesign a product package where they customer wanted the coloring of the package different for every flavor. This was for a natural energy drink.Digital.This is a finished piece. I am very satisfied with the finished piece I think it came out really well. All the packages look like they belong together, and if it did not have a name on them all you would still know they all go together.

Business Letterhead and Business CardSchool Project4/29/2009This was another school project where we had to create our own hypothetical business and design a letterhead and business card to go hand in hand.Digital.Overall I love this piece. I think it's fun and vibrant and really matches what the company is about. It's a fun and unique company and the busniess card and letterhead represent that without saying.
