2011: Consulting @ Addestino2011: R&D development @ Venture Spirit
Addestino, an innovation consultancy company based in Ghent, offers their clients consultants who have an in-depth technological knowledge to handle different projects. During my period @ Addestino, I was given the chance to develop and design an entire GUI (General User Interface) for a client that offers home automation for the care industry and residential buildings. Their solutions guarantee an integrated and intuitive control of building, home and care technology in a single, centrally located system that is easy to operate. In close cooperation with a colleague, workshops were given to potential clients in order to enhance the entire GUI. For that, field research and other challenging assignments had to be done.
Venture Spirit, a spin-off by Addestino, offers an online, in-company innovation competition that is open to all employees. This competition encourages participants to launch their own fictive venture as an entrepreneur. Over a period of three to four months, business plans are written by the entrepreneurs and reviewed by investors. At the end, one venture will be chosen by the board of directors in order to elaborate that particular idea. My role within this start-up was multiple. I takled R@D elaboration, lead the different competitions and when needed, designed the different graphics.

2009 - 2010 Postgraduate
Shoot for the moon, even if you miss, you’ll land amongst the stars.
This postgraduate has given me a broader look on business life in general, but at the same time, it has given me detailed insights that will be of value in my future business life.
On the right you can find a selection of courses I’ve had during the year 2010 - 2011.

I studied the postgraduate Management and Communication were I have gained valuable experience in management skills, organizing and presenting workshops, elaborating my language skills and many other very interesting courses. During this year, a pragmatic approach was key because most of our tutors were people from real business life. For instance, I have had marketing from Ignace Van Doorselaere, CEO Van de Velde and Brand Communication from Klaus Lommatszch, CEO Duval Guillaume.
During this postgraduate, a Business Development Project (BDP) had to be completed. This BDP had a duration of 10 weeks fulltime and each of the students had to find their own company for this traineeship. Because of my previous studies (Product Development) I searched for an interesting assignment where my knowledge about product design in general was needed. After some time, Durabrik (a general contractor) was the perfect match.
My assignment at Durabrik was to come up with a concept about flexible housing so that architects were able to develop and build their vision of the concept. In fact this task was about creating ideas on how a certain house could be built so that the habitat itself could be easily transformed to those needs of the persons who are living in it.
During this traineeship, an extensive search (including desk-research, market research, mystery shopping,...) was made about existing concepts and recent developments. After this analysis a first concept could be developed. Design drivers, specifications, needs of the consumer,... were listed so that the concept got its first shape. Further, detailed designs were made on how this concept could be interpreted. However, none of these designs can be displayed due to NDA with the promotor.

I have had marketing from Ignace Van Doorselaere, CEO Van de Velde. During these lessons, he announced that at the end of the year, he would give an internship at Van de Velde, as a reward, to one particular student. And he kept his word because at the end of the year, he announced that I’d won the internship at Van de Velde NV, producer of luxurious lingerie.
This internship had a duration of one month (6th of September - 5th of October 2010) and during this month, I was assigned to the sypply chain department, where I completed the task to optimize the production process at the headquarters of Van de Velde at Schellebelle, Belgium.
This assignment started with an analysis of the company in general with the emphasis on the production process. If I want to be able to give relevant feedback on how the production process could be altered, it’s necessary to have an extensive view on the inputs and outputs of the company.
This analysis was presented by a detailed flowchart with corresponding document. In this document, suggestions were made on how the production process could be optimized without the loss of workforces and large investments. Further, other recommendations were listed so that production orders would be more accurately, which would, in the future, give the production hall more slack.

Each year, thousands of people die due to sepsis. This syndrome is a serious medical condition caused by the presence
of pathogenic organisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses or parasites) in the bloodstream. This results in a life threatening whole
body inflammatory state, which is lethal if not properly treated. In most cases, bacteria have invaded the bloodstream
which means that administering antibiotics could kill the presence of the pathogenic organisms. As a result, if a patient
shows certain syndroms of sepsis, a blood sample will be taken and examined on the presence of bacteria. If positive,
identification of the bacteria with appropriate resistance patterns makes it possible to administer effective antibiotics to
the patient.
But the present methods for the detection of bacteria (cultivation of bloodsamples)
have a duration of two to six days before any identification or susceptibility tests
can be made. Within this time, patients can’t get appropriate treatment, with
aggravation effects, such as organ failure or even death. SeptiCare makes is
possible to detect and identify bacteria with appropriate resistance patterns within
a time frame of one hour after the bloodsample has been taken. It functions fully
automatic and can be used both in lab or point of care (see p.22), by the entire hospital
staff. This device could save thousands of lifes, because swift decisions demand rapid
results!
For my Master Thesis, I’ve worked together with a European consortium called InTopSens. There are over more than 50 scientists working on this technology (detecting bacteria in a bloodsample), so the scale of this project is quite large. And because of the constant changing of plans and goals, my assignment was to incorporate this technology (that was not yet fully determined) into a point-of-care diagnostics device. With this, InTopSens was able to look ahead to see potential problems.

First, a bloodsample has to be obtained from the patient. This method for deriving blood is still the same as before (with a winged needle).
After obtaining the blood-sample, this bottle and a cartridge have to be inserted into the readout device.
The blood will be fully auto-matically pumped into the cartridge. Together with the blood, lysate will be fully automatically added into the cartridge with a constant flow rate.
After blood and lysate are pumped into the cartridge, several technological compo-nents are analysing the bloodsample.
If the bloodtest is succesfully analysed (i.e. negative/positive), this data will be sent to the local hospital network server.
Bottle and cartridge are being disposed after use.

This assignment was part of the Design Lab competition Electrolux organised in the year 2008. Every year, Electrolux Design Lab invites industrial design students to present innovative ideas for appliances of the future. In 2008, our assignment was to redesign a cooking, washing and/or storage of food appliance for the I-generation. I came up with the ‘Foco’, an interactive fridge that is able to present different meals according to the different foods that are present in the appliance (with the help of RFID-tags). But the Foco isn’t just smart and interactive, it’s also very ecological sound, because of the fact that the fridge is able to enlarge or shrink, dependent on the amount of food. Due to this, the fridge will not be that energy consuming.
Browse the web, check your e-mails, check your food, check YouCook.com for more recipes, ... you can do it all
with this interactive freezer!
The idea has its origin in the babywalker world. This product lets one year old children learn to set their first steps. But this has only a estimated life span of four months. By combining two other functions (a baby cradle and a stroller) it’s possible to lengthen the life span to an estimated two years! And this is not the only thing that makes the Cameleon interesting. It’s adjust-able in height (due to the fact that every baby has its own dimensions) and perfectly foldable to a height of 20 centimeters (7,8 inches).

This assignment was focused on the redesign of an existing product. The bookbinder was fitted with a brand new system which makes it able to bind books in one time, up to a 100 pages.

Idea Competition Company ProductConcept
In my fourth year of product development, I’ve had the opportunity to write a business plan for a company that is specialised in designing and commercialising didactical games for children. The first concept of this company is CHIP, educational games for schools and for this concept, I wrote an extensive business plan. With this plan I participated in the Bizidee competition of 2008. From many submissions, this business plan was awarded second place in the professional category.
After this award, the company was founded in 2009 and launched its first product in October 2009. From the grounds up, we (myself and my partner) managed the company all by ourselves and the products are being sold to different types of schools in Flanders as we speak.
Because we are only with two people running the business, the tasks that had to be completed were of all kinds. From designing the entire product (packaging, logo’s, material, booklets, ...) to marketing and promotion (leaflets, fairs, website, video-commercial, ...).
For more information see the next pages or www.practha.com.
Promotional Video
Product Development
Due to the fact that our concept is brand new, we had to come up with something that explains the concept and the product in just a few minutes. I decided to built my own studio to create ‘an infinite white room’. Many hours later, the promotional film of Practha was launched, giving a clear introduction to new customers. This video can be found on: www.practha.com.
The product has been designed to match the user needs (children) and our customer needs (schools). Everything has been designed in an ecological point of view (everything is made out of wood and our booklets are printed on ecological paper and ink). Further, we have another 12 games up our sleeve, and this product has been designed so we are able to bring out a whole set of didactical games, packaged in ‘towers’, just like our first product (“De Groene Toren”). At this stage, the language in which the product is being distributed is Dutch, but there are plans to enlarge our market geographically.
Marketing - website design
Marketing - fairs
I built the entire website from scratch, using Dreamweaver (Adobe). For this, I learned how to work with Dreamweaver using tutorials that were available on the net. This website has general pages like Home, News, Product, Contact and an order page for our customers.
We presented our product on different fairs, and for that, we needed some POS-material. Using Illustrator, I created everything that was needed for the different fairs. Below you can see a selection of the POS material.

At this moment, the company is selling its products. But from day one I knew that this would not be my fulltime job. We have built the company in such a way, that this is just a freelance job for me. My interests and goals do not stop at this company, they reach further than that. The job I’m seeking at this point will have priority at all times. But then again, it was (and still is) very exciting to experience this at a young age. And I learned a lot, no doubt about it!

When time is on my side, I’d love to make practical and mostly wooden “things”. Below you can see an examples of this. Longboarding and making longboards has been a hobby of mine for a few years now. I’d love to construct new longboard designs and think of new ways to enhance the designs. For example, one of the designs has a carbon plate which enhances the weight-flex balance. The other example is a table of which the lights are able to switch to whatever color due to the use of RGB-Led lighting. I recon that there will be a day when I start carpentry in evening school, simply because I love working with wood (and the smell of fresh sawed wood!).All of the footage and pictures (like the longboard pictures) are taken with the use of a studio. Below you can find an impression of the studio I’ve made for the promotional video (see page 26).
At this point, I’m developing a marker box deisgned specifically for children. This marker box is not your typical marker holder. Due to a specific system, only one marker at a time can be released. In order to take another color, the first marker has to be back to its place. This has several consequences:
• The markers don’t get dry any longer because they have to be put back in their place before another can be taken.
• The childe undergoes a learning process.
This product is still in development, so specific pictures or system designs can’t be shown at this point (due to the IP).
I have tackled (and will tackle) all of the different design stages in order to have a full fledged product. Stages are:
• Idea creation• System design• Rapid prototyping (3D printing)• Materialising• Design stage - Product - Logo• ...
If all goes well, this product should hit the shelves in 2012!
Parallel with the marker box, I’m designing a similar product: a DVD box. As with the marker box, this product is still in development and only some visualisations of 3D printed prototypes can be shown. We already possess logo design and other, but this can’t be shown (again, due to IP). This DVD box has the same functionalities as the marker box and this too should hit the shelves in 2012!
