About this bookThe subject of Paul Druecke’s fifth and final city in his A Public Space photographic art project is Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square. I was pleased to be asked to contribute a photo for the project.

Three evenings in July 2009 I stopped at the square and took a number of photos. I selected my favorites for this book – and one of these photos (I haven’t yet decided which one) will be my submission for the project. This book provides a convenient way for me to preview and think about what photo might best represent Pioneer Courthouse Square as a public space.

It’s hard to choose just one photo. Each photo has a slightly different message, and all the photos reflect the facets of what the public gives to and receives from the Square. I enjoyed assembling this quick little collage.

MistyI engaged in conversation a young woman who was in the Square to attend a rally. She had arrived at least an hour early, so she had to entertain herself. The Square has plenty of space to allow separation between people. It’s a public place of solitude.
