Portraits of Poverty in Pakistan

2

The people live in the slums of Sahiwal, Pakistan's 22nd largest city, which has a population of around 270,000 and

is about 99 % Muslim.

More than 60 per cent of the city's residents live in extreme poverty, surviving on as little as £1.30 ($2.03)a day.

Life for the people living there is made increasingly difficult by the city’s extreme climate, which ranges from 45

degrees Celsius in summer and 2 degrees Celsius in winter.

United Arab Emirates photographer and professor Sohail Karmani wanted to show how people survive in poverty.

He shot expressive portraits of everyone from children to the elderly, to mystics, snake-charmers and fruit-sellers.

Sohail Karmani, a writing professor at New York University Abu Dhabi, spend two weeks touring the city of

Sahiwal, in the province of Punjab.
