Positive Behavior Support Work: Expect Respect at the High School Level June 27, 9 – 10am, Room: Madison Staff and students at Waterford High School have embraced and cultivated the concept of ""Expect Respect"" in order to establish a climate that encourages appropriate behavior and supports academic success. Presenters will share specific examples of activities used throughout the last eight years to promote the goals of the program. Attendees will be encouraged to explore avenues by which the precepts of Positive Behavior Support (PBS) can be adapted. History

Over the summer of 2003 eight staff members traveled to various locations to become trained in Positive Behavior Support Implementation

Since 2003 we have noticed a decrease in student detentions as well as overall respect for others in our building

What is PBS?

PBS is a broad range of systemic & individualized strategies for achieving important social & learning outcomes while preventing problem behavior

with all students.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT

PBS is:

NOT specific practice or curriculum . . .

It is general approach to preventing

problem behavior NOT limited to any particular group of students. . .

It is for all students NOT new . . . .

It is based on long history of behavioral practices

& effective instructional design& strategies

Implementation Steps

1. Establish PBS implementation team.

2. Characterize our school.

3. Obtain 80% staff consensus.

4. Agree on logical & realistic plans.

5. Conduct data-based monitoring.

6. Establish climate committee & implement.

School-wide & Classroom-wide Systems

1. Common purpose & approach to discipline2. Clear set of positive expectations & behaviors3. Procedures for teaching expected behavior4. Continuum of procedures for encouraging

expected behavior5. Continuum of procedures for discouraging

inappropriate behavior6. Procedures for on-going monitoring &

This program will: Create preventive continuum of behavior

WHS Steering Committee We have 10 members on our team – 9

Teachers and the Principal We meet during our lunch throughout

the year to plan activities and to discuss current problem behaviors

All staff members support the work of the PBS Steering Committee and assist with activities

WHS PBS Families

The student body is divided into 8 Families with at least 2 Family LeadersFamilies are randomly selected and remain

in the family for all four years There are around 20 students per familyAll staff are assigned to a family and

participate in activities

In family meetings groups had discussions on being an Upstander

Families created 2 posters and a skit to educate others about being an Upstander in a variety of situations.
