POWER-UP day 1

What makes metal different than other materials (like wood, ceramics, cloth, etc).

List as many ways as possible.

A brief overview of atoms

And sub-atomic particles

PRE-MAGNETISM &

ELECTRICITY

Atom DefinitionAtoms are the

basic unit of matter, which consist of a dense inner nucleus and an outer cloud of electrons.

The sub-atomic particlesThere are 3 sub-

atomic particles

- Protons- Neutrons - Electrons

Protons- Positively charged

- found in the nucleus- Relatively large mass

- Stationary within a solid object

Electrons Negatively charged Found orbiting

outside the nucleus Virtually no mass Have incredibly

high velocities around the nucleus, always moving around

Neutrons-ignore for our class this year

- Not charged- in nucleus

-relatively large mass- stationary

Connecting atomsto make objects

There are three types of bonds between atoms

- Ionic- covalent- metallic

Ionic bonds

We can ignore these for our class.Pay attention to them in chemistry.

Covalent bonds

We can ignore these for our class.Pay attention to them in chemistry.

Metallic Bonds• Its described as a “sea of

electrons” around the protons.• The electrons freely pass between

protons evenly dispersing themselves in the object

• This only happens in metals.

Polarized

When all of the electrons in a metal object have been shifted to one

side.

ACTIVITY!!!!

Exit Ticket Day 1

Please draw a picture of how the electrons move around the protons in a solid metal object

Now draw a picture of how the electrons are dispersed in a polarized metal object.
