DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PORTUGUESE AND ENGLISH

• SPELLING x PRONUNCIATION

– Portuguese - what you see is what you get

– English - what you see is almost never what you get

problem: early contact with written text

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PORTUGUESE AND ENGLISH

• NUMBER OF VOWELS AND CONSONANTS

– Portuguese is rich in vowels - diphtongs, triphtongs

– English is rich in consonants – consonant clusters

problem: tendency to add extra vowel sounds to words

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PORTUGUESE AND ENGLISH

• VOWEL SOUNDS– English has long vowels and short vowels • not, go - cheap, chip

– Portuguese has vowels • bolo - chipe

problem - misunderstanding - minimal pairs

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PORTUGUESE AND ENGLISH

• RHYTHM

– Portuguese is syllable-timed

– English is stress-timed

problem - emphasis on wrong words- native speakers speak too fast

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PORTUGUESE AND ENGLISH

• WORD STRESS– Portuguese - stress on the last, one before the last,

two before the last syllable

– English - also three before the last syllable (approximately, category), double stress (understand)

problem - adaptation to Portuguese pronunciation
