Key Lessons Of Deuteronomy• God desires to bless people through a

relationship with Him• This blessing can be experience through trust

and obedience• We as the sinner redeemed are servants of God

our master• God loves people and we should love God• God manifested His love for Israel through laws• Israel demonstrated love by obeying these laws

• Bring the first fruits and tithes (vs. 1-4)– Promised Land was west of the Jordan River– Israelites are to bring the first produce from their

plantings in the new land– Set it near the altar

• Words of thanks and praise to be given (vs. 5-10)– Upon delivering the first fruits and tithes, Israel is to

give a confession of thanksgiving to God– Remembers the history of Israel from the time of

Jacob living in Canaan to Egypt and the Exodus– NIV say Jacob was Aramean, KJV says Syrian

Instructions (26:1-15)

• Rejoice (vs. 11)– God gives to us and when we give back, we rejoice

• Prayer for the giving of the tithe (vs. 12-15)– Every third year the tithe was given not only to the

Levites, but also the stranger, fatherless, widow (see Num 18:21-24)

– Give in a prayerful state of mind

Instructions (26:11-15)

• A call to complete obedience (vs. 16)– Moses intercedes on God’s behalf, telling Israel to

keep the commands displayed in chapter 4 to 26

• Israel’s proclamation (vs. 17) – The Lord is their God– They will walk in His ways and keep His statutes

• God’s proclamation (vs. 18-19)– Israel’s obedience to the Lord would be rewarded– God would set them above all nations

Moses’ Exhortation to Israel (26:16-19)

• Command to set up a special altar (vs. 1-8)– Moses finishes preaching to the people concerning

the law– Directed to write all the words of the law on stones

atop Mount Ebal, whitewashed for easy reading– Directed the Israelites to build an altar on Mount Ebal– Peace offerings to be presented as well as a memorial

to the law– Joshua 8:20-32, this was fulfilled

• People of God (vs. 9-10– On this day, the Israelites became the people of God

The Special Altar (27:1-10)

• Those who will bless the people who obey God– Will stand on Mount Gerizim– Include Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and

Benjamin

• Those who will curse the people who disobey God– Will stand on Mount Ebal– Include Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and

Naphtali

• Fulfilled in Joshua 8:32-35

• Levites review curses for those that break the covenant and commands of God – People answer “Amen!” to every declaration– “So be it!” or “Truly!”

• Curses– Idolaters– Those that dishonor parents– Those that steal– Those that are cruel

• In Christ, we are blessed not because of obedience but because of our position with Him
