Welcome Local Car Hobbyists...... to the premiere issue of Collector Car Guide! In any new
endeavor, there are challenges and we have thus overcome many obstacles including covid-19 to bring this ultimate collector car resource guide to you.
One of the most rewarding aspects in compiling this directory has been the opportunity to meet the dedicated people who represent the collector car community throughout Maryland and Southern and Central Pennsylvania areas. As confirmed by several of these businesses and non-profits, this guide offers a new approach to reach the auto industry on a local level.
Regardless of the organization, we all share one goal in common: to help local car collectors across various marques and models acquire, repair, restore, protect, and when the time comes, sell their dream cars. And while all of these services can be reached within a two-hour drive, many are considerably closer, but due to increased competition online, do not come up readily in online searches.
Personally, I have been in the hobby over 35 years. In the past when “something broke,” (most likely, like me) you towed your dream ride to a shop you thought was reputable only to discover later that the mechanic damaged something else, did not actually fix the problem, misled you about repairs you did not need or overcharged you well beyond the original estimate (and hopefully not more than one of these maladies at one time)!
As a result, my primary goal in publishing this guide is to steer you in the direction of 4 four star and better rated businesses. Accomplishing this one goal makes it all worthwhile to improve your experiences, but please refer to our other goals as expressed in Our Mission on page 24.
During the past several months, I have endeavored to contact every conceivable collector car-related organization to contribute to this directory. To that end, we hope you, the reader, will embrace this directory as a staple reference guide for use in your garage or glove box all year long. However, if your favorite reputable parts counter, shop, or other business is one of the those not included, please encourage the owner/manager/director to contact us so they can get involved in next year’s edition as well as display these directories at their place of business.
As you get familiar with this unique directory, you will find special features includ-ing articles contributed by local experts, shows and events on pages 6 –9, clubs on pages 32-35, and the racing guide on page 26-27. Included are tips, factoids and some humorous quotes as well. At the same time, I encourage you to check out the various sponsors. When you visit in person, call or email, they would appreciate that you please mention you saw them in the Collector Car Guide.
How would you like to win a $100 on us toward your purchase at one of our display advertisers? Simply complete and submit the survey on page 38, or online at www.collectorcarguide.net, by April 30, 2021. We appreciate your input so we can provide you with an improved, enlarged directory next year. Until then, visit our new website that also provides a fully interactive directory and many other benefits. See page 39 for more information.

Why is an Appraisal Important for Your Collector Car? In order to protect your collector
vehicle's value (not to mention its sentimen-tal value and your peace of mind), there are compelling reasons to invest in an appraisal by a certified and bonded appraisal service.
When someone damages your collec-tor car, regardless of the coverage offered by their insurance company, they typically will attempt to settle for as low as possible, which will not come close to the actual re-pair or replacement costs.
Here are two other compelling examples to acquire an appraisal:
When a classic BMW was damaged in a fire, the insurance company wanted to total it. A certified appraisal cited comparably damaged vehicles that were high enough to convince the insurance company to cor-rectly repair this BMW so the owner could continue to drive and enjoy it.
Another example is a 1961 Mercedes Benz 160 that was apart for 30 years and
had to be removed from storage. After local offers topped at $10K, the owner hired an appraiser who researched the vehicle and provided a more realistic value of $45K, and the owner sold it for $48K!
Most financial lending institutions and insurance agencies will only accept an ap-praisal from a company that is bonded, has a web site and is certified. D Presented compliments of www.Collector CarInterests.com, a certi-fied and bonded appraisal service. Benefits of Consigning Your Vehicle
In today’s busy world, time seems to be our most valuable resource. There are plen-ty of things that you can do yourself, but why? When it comes to selling your classic or special interest vehicle, consigning with a reputable consignment company takes all the headaches and aggravation out of selling your pride and joy. When it comes to presenting your vehicle to a worldwide audience, professional photographs and a thorough write up can mean the difference between a sale and the potential buyer look-ing at other options.
The days of a 2-sentence description are gone as potential buyers want to un-derstand the history, provenance, running
status and decoding of the drivetrain, trim tag and vehicle identification number (VIN). From a marketing perspective, a consignment house has the resources and enjoys the volume discounts to market your vehicle across many platforms and websites cost effectively. Want to stay home on a Saturday night? Selling your vehicle means just that and if and when the prospective buyer arrives, does he decide to pick apart your car that you spent countless hours in the garage detailing and fixing, only to have a stranger tell you everything that’s wrong with it?
What do you do when the prospective buyer wants to give you a check and the

banks are closed? With a professional han-dling the sale, the pitfalls of forged checks and scams are eliminated. If a buyer brings cash, are you sure its legitimate or even worse—is the money counterfeit?
What about overseas buyers? Today’s overseas buyers want to make one call for purchasing, shipping to the port, customs, and shipping to their country. The advent of third-party inspection companies means that a long-distance buyer can feel more at ease with a fresh set of neutral eyes looking at their potential purchase.
Do you have a list of reputable transpor-tation companies to help them get their car home? Most buyers today don’t know how to arrange shipping and therefore will look elsewhere when that service is not offered.
If you don’t know where to direct the buyer for that service, they may look else-where. Having a professional sales orga-
nization eliminates all of the above and once everything has been handled, they call you to pickup a check from a licensed and bonded dealer, not a stranger in your driveway. From the buyer’s perspective, when purchasing from a dealer versus an individual, there is an added layer of pro-tection in case something goes wrong. Do your homework when it comes time to sell your vehicle.
D Provided compliments of Classic Auto Mall. Located less than two hours away from most Collector Car Guide readers in Central PA, Classic Auto Mall showcases a vari-ety of classic and specialty vehicles of various makes and models. Visit www.ClassicAutoMall.com or call 888-227-0914 to schedule a tour to-day. See our ad on back cover.
Battery Saving Tips
If possible, when storing older vehicles, disconnect your battery. (This will also prevent a fire should critters chew on your wiring.) If your car or truck has a computer, check with your owners manual and/or mechanic first. You can purchase a “quick disconnect” battery connector
that will make it easy to reconnect your battery cable under $10 from your local parts counter.
If you cannot dis-connect the battery,
connect a trickle charger to ensure the battery will not drain.
If the battery is not sealed, once a year check the water levels under the caps to make sure it is not low. If needed, add distilled water but do not overfill.

What is a Ceramic Coating? While the consumer detailing products
industry now loosely applies the “term” ce-ramic to its advance waxes and polymers, most do not compare in terms of gloss or durability. Brand name waxes and wax hybrid products last months compared to ceramic coatings that protect your finish for years.
Professional ceramic coatings set a new paradigm for the vehicle owner by repelling dirt and debris from clinging to the paint and eliminating water spots (dried minerals). This translates to fewer, easier washes and elimi-nates reapplications (of polishes and waxes).
Besides the advanced chemistry used to create the professional ceramic coating’s longevity, another reason for its durability lies in the surface preparation. In addition to detailed washing and a clay bar treat-ment to remove contaminants, a profes-sional detailer utilizes deionized water and chemical degreasers to remove oil, tar and
grease. Paint correction ensues to reduce swirl marks, chips and scratches to help the coating adhere better to the paint.
Just prior to the application of the coat-ing, the vehicle is moved to a dust-free booth, insulating it from dust and debris, to provide a rub down of alcohol/water mix, apply a primer polish to increase the paint’s shine and finally, apply the ceramic coating.
The proper professional application of layers of the ceramic coating takes several hours, not to mention time to allow for heat baking and hardening. The resulting deeper shine and reflective properties will no doubt enhance your appreciation of your collector car and ultimately, its value.D Presented compliments of Yanks Auto Detail. A s you are aware, it is difficult to find gas stations that offer any-
thing other than E10–10% alcohol at the gas pump in some Pennsylvania and many Maryland areas. The government claims that it helps the environment while some citizens think it is just a farm subsidy. They feel the amount saved on our dependence on foreign oil is negated by the 10% less fuel efficiency. Whatever the case, it is here to stay and can potentially damage the fuel systems and engines in our collector cars, farm, off-road vehicles and equipment without preventative action.
Although some replacement car parts made in the last 10 years have adjusted for it, many original parts containing rubber or fiberglass such as gaskets, o-rings and gas tanks are susceptible to the alcohol. Check these parts and replace them in your vintage car with their ethanol-friendly equivalents to avoid fuel system leaks or breakdowns.
Most trouble occurs when storing a ve-hicle, tractor, chainsaw, etc. as the alcohol starts to separate from the gas within a few months time. If you cannot start and operate the vehicle on a regular basis, here are some storage tips to help prevent prob-lems: fill your tank to avoid condensation
forming in the remain-ing air space a n d f o g your car-buretor with fogging oil to pre-vent condensation in the bowls.
Do not use dry gas, which contains alcohol to only compound the problem.
In contrast, there are additives on the market that will stabilize
the fuel, but read the la-bel to make sure they
are manufactured to counter the alcohol separation.
However, the best solution is to run ethanol-free gasoline where pos-sible (which has at
least three times the shelf line of E10) and
contains conditioners to prevent problems due to
extended storage. (Locations are listed on these pages.) Some sta-
tions stock octane grades from 87 through 93 for your vehicle, depending on its needs. Some race fuels are either ethanol free or contain less that 10% alcohol (but may con-tain lead). It costs a little more per mile but will provide ongoing worry and damage-free long-term operation of your engine(s).D By Alan Power, contributing writer

What is a
Collector Vehicle?
The definition has certainly changed over the years. We used to term
them as antiques, classics or historic ve-hicles but today, the industry uses the term “collector” to encompass all of these previ-ous terms for any car, truck or motorcycle that is both popular, desirable and/or rare, has a brand significance such as Bugatti or Ferrari or a model significance such as 911 or Corvette.
In the past 20 years, growing interest in collector cars and trucks fueled by a plethora of live televised auctions such as Barrett Jackson and Mecum, especially with online participation, have taken the market to an entirely new level from the past 20 years. Some vehicles such as ‘66 -’72 GM, Ford or Mopar models with big block

engines that were once affordable even by someone earning a modest income are no longer attainable. As a result, the market has trickled down to more affordable ver-sions of these models (i.e. small block) that are now more sought after as well as newer, later models.
With more varied collectibles today, insurance companies are increasingly ac-cepting newer niche or upscale models on collector policies as long as the owner limits mileage and use per year. For example, a 2020 Mustang Bullitt would be accepted while a base Mustang may not.
In the past 10 years, the collector truck market has exploded since more people now drive modern trucks and SUV’s and fondly look back to older models like the Ford F100 and even the VW Microbus.
And “collector” does not just apply to numbers-matching stock vehicles. Restom-ods are trending now where a hobbyist that admires a classic body style can modify it according to his or her taste, and drive with a particular preference of power, comfort and fuel economy. In some cases, restom-ods with 500+ horsepower and custom paint are worth more than the stock version of the same vehicle.
On the other hand, a non-running ve-hicle or roller version of a desirable vehicle sometimes considered a barn or backyard find even has value today, whereas in the past it was considered disposable. It is not uncommon to find a collector who will invest well over 100,000 dollars to restore such a vehicle!

Do You Have a “stalled Project?”
Every owner has a particular expecta-tion for his or her collector vehicle. Most projects are “stalled” and don’t require a complete, expensive restoration. Piece-mealing work in smaller steps where pos-sible makes it more feasible, affordable and even pleasurable to get back onto the road. Plenty of shops want to help make this happen. Evaluating expec-tations within a realistic scope is the best way to approach any res-toration project, big or small.
What’s the bud-get? It’s nearly impossible to get accurate quotes on 50 year old ve-hicles. The shop will bill for time and mate-rial. Unforeseen labor and parts are almost a guarantee when pulling apart a decades old machine so account for flexibility.
Time availability? Quality shops with af-fordable prices are popular and may have a wait time before beginning work. Personal free-time may offer opportunities to tinker.
Cruising vs Maintenance? Weigh desires to “turn-key” versus “turn-wrench” as each offers personal rewards based on
the owner’s hobby and experience. Old technology parts of most collector ve-hicles require more attention while newer, restomod-esque upgrades can minimize maintenance while increasing dependabil-ity and comfort.
Outlining your expectations and devel-oping a plan in writing is the best approach to present to potential shops who can get that project done right.D Presented compliments of Jer-ry’s Hot Rods. storage Locations Are not “All the same”
Looking to protect your collector car in-vestment? There are many considerations that should be made when looking for a storage facility:
seCurITY—How well is the building secured? What kind of access do you have to picking up or dropping off your car? Does the location offer a 24 hour facility, specific hours or operate by appointment only? Can you retrieve your car yourself or is it delivered outside their garage door by a facility employee?
LOCATIOn—How far do you want to go each time to pick up or drop off your car from home or work? Is the facility near major roads, a metro station or airport? Can you park your daily driver outside?
TYPe Of BuILDInG—Insulated buildings offer dry storage with little vari-
ance in temperature. Conversely, metal buildings that lack insulation can create condensation, which causes flash rusting.
CLIMATe COnTrOL AnD AIr quALITY—Are the temperature and hu-midity kept at a constant or near constant level? Good ventilation ensures air quality and prevents high levels of carbon mon-oxide from exhaust fumes.
rOuTIne sTArT uP AnD MOVe-MenT—While all stored vehicles should be started and moved on a regular basis, are there personnel at the facility that can do that for you in your absence?D Provided compliments of The Driver’s Vault. It’s funny—over 50 years ago, car buy-ers would actually shy away from power op-tions such as power windows, power seats, cruise control and other creature comforts for fear they would break. In contrast today, not only does virtually any new car on the road today contain those as standard items, but a whole lot more since the introduction of computers. Since the 1980s, onboard computers increased automotive technol-ogy exponentially
Except aficionados of early automobiles, how many drivers prefer to crank their engines or manually control windshield wipers? On the other hand, fast-forward to today—how many want to give up the thrill of driving a manual transmission or even let the car drive by itself ?
One thing is for certain—our human desire for continued technological advance-ment is endless. As technology advances, so does the great love/hate divide of the technology when systems perform properly versus when those same systems fail.
When you see the automotive media re-view today’s cars, trucks and SUVs, keep in mind that over 95% of the vehicles tested are new. Even their long-term tests do not include vehicles over two years old. Then there is also the increased cost factor—the more onboard functions, both standard and optional, the higher the cost to the consumer.
The good news is that across all brands, the automotive industry builds better cars
today lasting well over 200,000 miles. Sometimes today, length of ownership is more determined by computer and relat-ed electrical issues than by the life of the drivetrain.
So as a car aficionado, do you prefer to drive something more advanced, powerful and efficient or something older that is easier and cheaper to maintain or repair and does not push back like accelerators or lane-keeping resistance in the steering wheel? Then there is the controversy of gas vs. electrically charged. Mass media outlets extol the benefits of quiet opera-tion, power and reduction of the depen-dence on oil. But they rarely discuss the drawbacks—actual higher plug-in costs, potential power failures that prevent time to charge (20 minutes to overnight) and the toxicity created in the manufacture and disposal of batteries. What about a hybrid that integrates the benefits and minimizes the shortcomings of both?
So if you are looking to purchase a newer vehicle and still prefer to be in control be-hind the wheel, keep in mind that with each passing model year, manual transmissions are disappearing while more automated fea-tures like lane keeping and driver monitor-ing are becoming more common. Another option is to maintain or modify an older vehicle to your taste and liking. So what is the right amount of technology for you? 6 volts, 12 volts or 48 volts?D Contributed by Alan Power
