Higher Expectations for a Brighter Future

A Typical School Day Within the school day, your child will be receiving the

following minutes of instruction: 200 minutes of Language Arts Time

This would include Reading, Writing, Fine Motor Work, and Handwriting

60 minutes of Math 30 minutes of Concept Instruction (Social Studies and

Science) 35 minutes of Specials (Music, PE), 50 minutes of Art

Half Day

Approximately half the instructional time of their full day Art is incorporated into the general curriculum

Curriculum: Handwriting: Zaner Bloser

Each child has his/her own workbook. Workbooks will be sent home at the end of the year.

Science: Eye-Openers Series

Social Studies: Let’s Find Out News Magazine National Geographic Books

Math: Everyday Math

Home Links *Keep in a safe place Homework Grid Workbook will be utilized in the second semester.

Reading: Common Core Themed Units

6 Themes: Each theme is broken up into 6 weeks Guided Reading is taught daily in small groups.

Pacing Guides Guides are designed to cover the current

learning standards and expectations *Common Core

All Kindergarten teachers within the district use these guides.

Instruction Methods

Instruction will be differentiated based on students’ learning styles and academic needs.

Miss. Chelsea Zingale (Reading Specialist) and Miss. Merrill will provide support for qualified students .

Interventions have been built into our day.

Assessments: Assessments are ongoing and help inform

instruction and report progress. KRAL Sept. 21-25 in school Report Cards will be coming home each

Quarter. Interim Reports as needed. Through out the school year, your child’s

teacher will conduct conferences, as well as, be available for questions.

Discipline Policy

Homework Policy

Kindergarten Homework Policy

 In Nordonia Hills the Kindergarten team believes the purpose of homework is to extend learning and/or provide practice in applying concepts initially presented in the classroom. It also provides opportunities for independent and guided work.

Time Allotments: Kindergarten may receive up to 20 minutes, in addition to the

District Reading Goal of reading 20 minutes, 5 times a week. Individual completion time may vary. Responsibility: Students will turn in designated assignments Students will be recognized for the completion of assignments

Homework

Homework Calendar: Students will receive a monthly homework calendar.

Please initial after each square is completed. All assignments are required. You may work on the calendar at your own pace but all assignments are due by the end of the month.

Reading: Your child will be expected to participate in a reading

experience 20 minutes, 5 times a week. Students are expected to read 400 minutes a month.

* examples include: books read to, read alone, environmental print, mail, magazines, cartoons, letters and cards.

Half time students should plan on doing homework nightly.

Foster Independence

Dress for success! Practice dressing independently including

winter wear. *Snow pants, mittens and boots required to play in the snow. Outside unless under 20 degrees with wind chill.

Keep an extra change of clothes at school. Dress in layers or keep a sweater at school. Practice tying shoes.

Pack/Unpack book bag independently. Develop a homework routine.

Transportation

If there is a change please notify the school/teacher as soon as possible (email or note).

Car Pool- team up with friends and neighbors

Students must WATCH for their car. Enter on the PASSENGER SIDE for safety.

Practice operating door and seatbelts at home.

•Bussing will be provided for students living outside a 1 mile radius of Ledgeview.

• Busses will meet at the front of the building.•Carpool will meet at the back of the building.

•Bus route information will be available on the district website next week.

•Additional information will be provided at Open House 8/19/15.

Snacks Snacks are permitted.

Please check with your teacher if you have questions. No snacks requiring spoons-spills. Nothing with nuts or nut products.

Water only is permitted in the classroom.

Birthday treats: Edible Treats are not permitted.

They will be returned home. Suggested items include:

Pencils, Erasers, Note Pads Party Favors, Coloring Books, Gift
