"DIDO A N D A E N E A S " Dido and Aeneas, w h i c h was composed and per­

formed about the year 1689, is one of the f i rs t Eng l i sh Operas. Whi l e no th ing positive is known about the details of the o r ig ina l performance, i t has been sug­gested t h a t Purcell , himself , took one of the parts ; a l though i t is more l i k e l y he directed the perform­ance at the harpsichord i n accordance w i t h the cus­tom at the t ime.

THE STORY OF THE OPERA

^^Dido a n d Aeneas

Dido was the daughter of a T y r i a n k i n g . She sailed f rom Tyre to Afr ica where she b u i l t a c itadel , and around this fort the c i ty of Carthage arose-

Dido f e l l i n love w i t h Aeneas, the Tro jan hero, w h e n he arr ived i n Afr ica on his journey to f i n d the c i ty of Rome. There was an i d y l l i c period w h i l e Aeneas was i n Carthage, but a group of ev i l sorcer­esses devised a plot to send Aeneas away. They sent a sp i r i t to i n f o r m Aeneas t h a t the gods demanded t h a t he must hasten to seek the new home w h i c h the gods had promised h i m . Aeneas complied w i t h their command and sailed away.. Dido, i n despair, de­stroyed herself on a funera l pyre.
