Memorial ThanksThere’s a prayer, “A friend is more valuable than gold.” How wealthy in friends Rusty was! The hundreds of people who came to pay their respect to him speaks highly of our community. There were so many people who gave their love and support this past year while Paul was battling his many illnesses. The outpouring of masses, food, flowers and monetary donations was greatly appreciated. How can one ever thank you all enough? Thanks also goes to the hospital staff for his wonderful care, our minister, Fr. Kinnaman, and all who made the services so beautiful, the ladies and gentlemen who worked so hard preparing our dinner after the services, the unbelievable amount of cards wishing us sympathy. May these people be blessed for their caring. Frain Mortuary, Dan and Jon, did such an excellent job of taking care of us all.

Haley hammers Talladega, earns the Anvil trophy
Justin Haley stands on the finish line at Talladega with the checkered flag after winning his first start at the legendary venue.
Just nine days after his 18th birthday, Justin Haley proved his point, silencing the critics at Talladega Superspeedway going from the back to the front, twice.
After clinching the 2016 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East championship in a record-setting season, the Winamac native moved into the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series as a team member with the 2016 championship winner GMS Racing.
NASCAR’s rule for superspeedways, requiring competitors to be 18 years of age, forced Haley to sit out the races at Daytona and Atlanta. Rules also require you to show competence at a superspeedway in a non-NASCAR sanctioned series.
MDM Motorsports offered Haley their No. 28 Toyota for the ARCA General Tire 200 on the 2.6-mile restrictor plate track. After showing good speed in practice, heavy
rain canceled qualifying, leaving Haley to start in the 23rd position.
Haley’s NCWTS crew chief Kevin Bellicourt would call the shots from pit road, while NASCAR Cup Series regular Kevin Hamlin was in the stands talking Haley through the field.
Haley drove into the top five in the first half of the race, but under a caution on Lap 40 a battery issue forced him to pit. The crew quickly fixed the electrical issue, topped his fuel, made an adjustment to the tight-handling car and sent him back out to the rear of the field with 34 laps remaining. He would be forced to restart from the 30th position.
Running third on the last lap, a single-car crash in the lead pack pulled the fourth caution flag of the day. ARCA rules to finish the race under green flag conditions extended the race from 74 to 84 laps, while the debris was cleaned up. ARCA reset the field and running second under the caution, leader Brandon Lynn’s No. 88 Chevrolet would slow as his fuel expired, giving Haley the chance at victory in a one-lap shootout.
Taking the green and white flags for the final 85th lap with the No. 18 car of Riley Herbst to his outside, it would be an exciting last lap. Herbst and Haley bumped fenders at least three times before Haley pulled away from the pack down the backstretch, taking the checkered flag through the tri-oval.
Haley said after the race, “We worked our way from the back, then we had ignition issues about halfway through the race and had to race back through it again. I can’t say enough about these MDM Motorsports guys. It’s crazy. I’ve always wanted to run Talladega. My spotter and crew chief helped me through it. I listened and did what they told me and it worked out. Hopefully we can carry this momentum into Kansas next week in the trucks.”

Fly flags at half-staff on May 15, National Peace Officers Memorial Day
Question: On what two days does federal law require American flags to be flown at half-staff? Answer: Memorial Day (last Monday in May) and May 15, National Peace Officers Memorial Day.
This tribute to American law enforcement officers is part of the historic crime bill that President Bill Clinton signed into law in 1994. At the request of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, Public Law 103-322 designates Peace Officers Memorial Day as one of only two days each year during which government agencies, businesses and residents are to fly their U.S. flags at half-staff.
“On May 15, we honor the sacrifices of our law enforcement officers by lowering our flags for National Peace Officers Memorial Day,” said Craig W. Floyd, memorial fund president and CEO. “The names of more than 21,000 men and women who wore the uniform grace the memorial walls, and they deserve all the recognition this day bestows on them.”
In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police
Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
As part of National Police Week, the names of 143 law enforcement officers killed in 2016, as well as 251 officers who died in prior years, will be formally dedicated on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC, on May 13, during the 29th Annual Candlelight Vigil.
Established in 1984, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund is a private non-profit organization dedicated to telling the story of American law enforcement and making it safer for those who serve. The Memorial Fund maintains the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC, which contains the names of 21,183 officers who have died in the line of duty throughout U.S. history. The memorial fund has begun construction of the National Law Enforcement Museum,
which will tell the story of American law enforcement through high-
tech, interactive exhibitions, historical artifacts and extensive educational programming. For more information, visit www.LawMemorial.org.
