Types of Storage.

There are 5 types of storage, we will focus on these 2:

Primary Storage Secondary Storage

What Is Primary Storage?.

Component in the computer that stores information for a short time.

Also, It’s the only one directly accessible to the CPU.

e.g.: SAN, Processor Cache & Register, Floppy disks, RAM.

What Is Secondary Storage?.

All data storage that is not currently in a computer's primary storage or memory. An additional synonym is external storage.

e.g.: RAID, Flash Memory (USB Flash Drives), Floppy disks, Magnetic Tape

We Will focus more on these following storage devices:

R.A.I.DS.A.N

What is R.A.I.D?.

R.A.I.D is an acronym for “Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disk”.

R.A.I.D is a Secondary Storage device. It Turns multiple “Physical” Hard Drives, into single “Logical” Drive.

R.A.I.D Can do a lot of good things, but also has a lot of problems.

There are many types of R.A.I.D, Starting from “R.A.I.D 0”, ending

somewhere between “R.A.I.D 10-14.”

Types of R.A.I.D

As been said recently. There are many types of R.A.I.D, but we will focus on what mostly used and what you normally see in the present day:

What is R.A.I.D “0.?”

Also known as “Disk Striping .”

It allows to combine multiple Hard Drives of same size, into one extremely big disk, between 2-32.

What is Good?.

It makes Hard Drive easy to pullout information, and record it.

What is Bad?.

If one Hard Drive fails, All data lost or destroyed .

(No Redundancy)

What is R.A.I.D “1”?.

Also known as “Disk Mirroring”.

It makes 2 Hard Drive mirror images.

What on the first Hard Drive, is on the second Hard Drive.

What is Good?.

If one Hard Drive fails, your computer/server stays up and running.

We can replace the failed Hard drive with new one and it mirror the new Hard Drive and digitally “Rebuilding Array”.

What is Bad?.

There’s no extra space giv-en, it only does mirroring.

It has normal Hard Drive speed, sometimes faster, sometimes slower.

What is Good?.

If one Hard Drive fails, your computer/server stays up and running.

Same as R.A.I.D, but it uses additional Hard Disk for redundancy.

It duplicate data for all Hard Drives, between 3-32.

Not all the Hard Disk size are usable, because it uses one Hard Disk for redundancy.

S.A.N(Storage Area Network)

What is S.A.N?.

S.A.N is a acronym for “Storage Area Network”.

S.A.N is a Primary Storage dedicated network of boxes to store data. It stores data for your infrastructure.
