WARM-UP Today is Day 1, January 27th

Turn in signature pages and homework, and get paper/pencils BEFORE bell rings!

  Write your response to the prompt below in your

composition notebook. If you do not yet have one, write on a separate sheet and you can glue it in later:

  What is an essay? What have you learned about essay

writing? What do you still want to know? What is the hardest part of essay writing for you? Write at least complete six sentences

OVERVIEW This week’s long-term objective is “We will be

able to write an effective SAT-style five paragraph essay”

Over the course of the next week, we will review the key elements of an essay piece by piece.

We will go through each step of the process in class through 20 min-50 min workshops, each with a specific objective

Choosing a topic Is it relevant to you? Do you have a strong opinion about it? Do others care about the issue? Can you propose a reasonable solution?

Review the possible topics with your elbow partner.

Decide on two topics (main and backup) for your essay. You can use the examples or something else

Free writing “Free Writing” is like pouring all of your

thoughts onto paper. Don’t take your pen off the page; keep

writing for the entire time. If you don’t know what to write, write “I

don’t know what to write” until you do. Don’t try to sort “good” and “bad”

ideas. Don’t worry about spelling and

grammar.
