Musical BlissOn Monday evening I had the privilege of attending the 2014 Foundation Day Concert, this year entitled Joy and Sorrow. It was a superb concert, highlighted by the purebrilliance of the Camerata Choir and punctuated by wonderful performances by the Flute and Ritornelli Ensembles, a duet by Ian Mallett and Andrew Ray, and moving piecesby the Radford Chorale, Vocalettes and the Choristers choirs. On a personal note, I was particularly moved by the massed choir singing Anthem for Wisdom which was amusical tribute written by emerging composer Daniel Brinsmead, commissioned to mark my arrival as the 6th Principal of Radford College.

There is no doubt that Radford College has an outstanding music program; the Foundation Day concert confirmed that for me in no uncertain fashion! I am looking forward toattending many of the other musical events throughout the year.

The evidence is clear – teacher quality is paramountIn a school the size of Radford College there is a constant stream of teacher vacancies. Teachers take Long Service Leave, they take Maternity Leave, they leave to take uppositions interstate and overseas, on rare occasions they leave to take up promotional positions in other schools in the ACT, and sometimes they even retire. Each time wehave a vacancy in the College, we work tirelessly to attract and retain the very best teachers.

I was reminded recently of the importance of the decisions surrounding teacher appointments when reading an article in an Australian Council of Educational Research(ACER) journal. The article, written by Stephen Dinan and the late Ken Rowe (who was tragically killed in the Victorian bushfires in 2009), examines the research that hasbeen conducted testing whether the middle schooling structure is more effective than the traditional primary to secondary school structure.

There is no doubt that the middle years are a critical period when young people experience substantial physical and emotional change. During this time, some studentsdisengage or are alienated from learning, and growth in academic attainment can plateau or even fall. These are also the years when attitudinal, behavioural and social

problems escalate. It is a period when matters such as body image and sexual orientation can become critical issues and, for girls in particular, personal appearance can takeon disproportional importance.

Traditionally, middle schooling has been based on the idea that these problems are due, at least in part, to ‘traditional schooling’, and can be avoided by taking a differentapproach to school organisation, curriculum, assessment and pedagogy. The issue for schools examining the pros and cons of middle schooling is that despite the largevolume of published works addressing this issue, there is little evidence-based research.

According to Dinham and Rowe, ‘Longitudinal data on student achievement and how these relate to any initiative are difficult to obtain and measure. As a result, judgementsof success and failure are often based largely on teachers’ perceptions, rather than on evidence linking interventions to measurable student achievement outcomes’. Thearticle also states that in education, too frequently, too much attention is paid to the conditions of teaching and to matters such as class and school organisation, rather thanbuilding capacity in the school’s most valuable resources, its teachers. ‘What is actually done within the classroom and schools is the most important thing, not structures.Quality teaching and quality teachers are central to student achievement. On this, the research literature is powerful and unequivocal’.

This is a powerful message for all in education management. When considering the placement of teachers we must ensure that we select the right people for the right agelevel. We need to be confident that they will maximise student engagement, learning outcomes and achievement progress for their particular cohort. What matters most is thatwe have quality teaching and learning provision, coupled with high teaching standards and relevant, ongoing teacher professional learning that will serve the needs of ourstudents.

And finally…

As we end Term 1, I wish all Radford families a holy Easter and a happy and relaxing vacation. I look forward to welcoming all students back to school on Monday, 28 April.

Foundation Day 2014Friday April 11

HOD Sport: Mr Peter Haynes

The last day of Term 1 is a celebration of Foundation Day. It is a day when the whole school gathers together to celebrate its origins. (Activities will take accountof the weather).

The day begins with a Service in the G Wigg Sports Centre which celebrates the school and its achievements, as well as reflects on our role in the wider society. Thisgathering is emotional and moving to all who are present.

Following the Service, the Secondary School students will take part in travel games and socialize together, in a variety of venues, depending on the weather. WhileHouse Points are awarded on the day, the games are more about sharing and community than competition.

The Secondary School will then gather in the TB Millar Hall to reflect on the day, and for the awarding of the Bishop's Cup.

Students should wear their House shirt / sports uniform to school and bring their own food for the day. Dismissal will be in time for normal buses home.

Foundation Day is the best day of the year. Assessment is over and the holidays beckon. The day is a 'wind down' into the holidays and a chance to relax afterwhat has been a busy and active first term.

A term’s notification not only helps families avoid the withdrawal penalty of half aterm’s fee, it also means that new families can be offered places at the school in good time.

Radford Community Mandarin Language ClassesContact: Mr Chad Birks, Mandarin Teacher

These classes will be restarting on Monday 5 May 2014. The classes are open to all teachers, parents and students, as well as the general community.

Location: Radford Junior School Library Time: Beginners classes 5.15 – 6:00pm Continuing classes 6.00 – 6.45pm Cost: $60 per term Focus: Speaking fluent Mandarin

The classes have been highly successful for those who have stuck with it and these participants are now competent speakers of conversational Mandarin:

“I have attended Zhongwenke (Chinese Classes) on and off for a few years now with Chad. During the times when I attended regularly, I really learned somuch! I am now able to give many of my classroom instructions in Chinese and I am able to hold brief conversations. I find it easier to learn and retain newwords because of the way these classes have been conducted. Less notes… More conversations. This is a great way to learn a language. I recommendZhongwenke to any teacher in this school as a way of connecting with what your children are learning.” Richard Black (Radford Teacher)

“The discussions in class are great. Everyone is encouraged to participate in an enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere. My Chinese has definitely improved and Iam looking forward to starting classes again.” Drew Miller (Radford Parent)

To be successful at learning the Mandarin Language you will need to consistently attend classes and be willing to practice five to ten minutes a day. If you're a parentpractising with your child is a great way to support your their learning.

If you are willing to commit to learning Mandarin please email chad.birks@radford.act.edu.au with your name, contact number, and a short paragraph about why you want tostudy Mandarin. Please include information about any previous study of Mandarin you have undertaken. Hope to see you there! Chad Birks

From the Head of Junior SchoolPaul Southwell

Ken Blanchard once stated "none of us is as smart as all of us". As we complete our first term of 2014, I am reminded of the importance of working together, ofcollaborating, of sharing a journey together.

Overall I am very pleased with the start we have made this year, as we complete this final week we have:

celebrated the commencement of our new College PrincipalIntroduced over 100 new students into our Junior School, with some degree of comfortwelcomed 6 new staff to our teaching and learning teams, with great successintroduced an iPad pilot at Year 5enjoyed a successful start to our new Tech Coach position, coaching our teacherscommenced the refinement of our language approaches, reading this term, with spelling and grammar next term. All staff coming together to build upon each other'sprofessional understandingscelebrated our largest Grandfriends Daybeen humbled and walked a little way in Gruffalo shoesgambled upon the weather for our successful swim and Gruffalo Days to then be "confused" by weather predictions on Athletics Dayintroduced three-way parent interviews at Years 5 & 6.

A busy term and yet a brief description of happenings from our first quarter are merely a part of our aims for this year.

We are working toward a greater reflection of “none of us is as smart as all of us.” Our teaching teams are continuing to build and strengthen their collaboration, knowing thatthis will deepen their teaching and learning, as well as presenting greater opportunities for student collaboration, questioning and clarification.

We will continue to work on how we may better step with you. How we may better share our journey, to make us as smart as all of us. I was reminded of one of thedifferences between the teaching profession and other similar professions last weekend, as we had cause to spend time with some lovely and supportive nurses. I cameaway so very impressed by the professional and warm interaction provided. I was also reminded that I hold that same expectation of my staff, for all your sons and daughterseach and every day.

Week 10, we are all very tired. We will get through and enjoy our finale to the term, our Foundation Day and then we will all rest, recuperate and refresh. Keep reading!

Finally, I would like to congratulate all involved in last weeks "Magic Bathtub" assembly. Our specialist staff organised this assembly and shared a brilliant trivia quiz aboutthemselves. A truly entertaining and enjoyable assembly. The highlight, however, of this Assembly was the award winners who were chosen by their peers, for taking ACTIONin their class work this term.

Thank you for your generous and warmly received support this term.

Warm regardsPaul Southwell

Among theusual collection of school holiday routines that we parents tend to squeeze in, such as getting the mandatory haircut and finding a winter school uniform that fits, Canberracan really be enjoyed as haven, created for children who are eager to explore and discover.

In the Primary Years Programme, students explore six different units of inquiry each year. Each unit of inquiry is organised under a Transdisciplinary Theme. You may havenoticed these on your child’s Radford Online page, Who We Are, Where We Are in Place and Time, Sharing the Planet etc. As a child journeys through the Programme theirunderstanding of a Transdisciplinary Theme deepens. For example in a Who We Are unit of inquiry this term in Pre K, students have been exploring the nature of self, while ina Who We Are inquiry in Year 6 they have been investigating the social, emotional and physical changes associated with adolescence.

There are many ways that we adults can enhance a child’s understanding of these Transdisciplinary Themes. Experiences that invite children to think, feel, wonder andconnect are particularly meaningful. Below is a list of suggestions that, should you have the time, may be a way for you to tap into your son or daughter’s inquiring mind andof course deepen their understandings. They may also be of use to you during school holidays or the series of wintery Canberra weekends that lie ahead of us in Terms 2 and3.

Where We Are in Place and Time: Visit the War Memorial, attend the Dawn Service, take a walk down ANZAC Parade to visit the memorials, visit the National Library, enjoyconversations with grandparents, aunties, uncles or neighbours, view photo albums, talk, share stories, draw family trees, explore your local neighbourhood, go orienteering, take a bike tour of the parliamentary triangle, view a big map of the ACT then take a trip north, south, east and west of the borders. Go to Old Parliament House, NewParliament House, Regatta Point, share the story of Walter Burley Griffin with your child. Take a ride around Lake Burley Griffin, visit the old Canberra Railway Museum,Blundells Cottage or St John’s School 19th century school-house museum.

Who We Are: View your and your child’s baby photos, reflect, talk and share stories with your child about their years as a baby or a toddler. Listen to and answer theirquestions. Visit the hospital, town or city where your child was born. Explore the meaning of Easter. Who celebrates it? Why is it celebrated? What symbols are used inAustralia and other countries around the world among those who celebrate Easter? Go to an Easter Service at your local church. Talk about birth, life and death together withyour child. Pets and animals are often a good starting point for these conversations. Record your eating habits looking at healthy and unhealthy choices. Make time to enjoystillness, meditation and peaceful moments together. Discuss what you and other family members need to feel well – time together, time alone, running, biking, listening tomusic, dancing, playing sport, reading, creating, gardening or having screen time.

Sharing the Planet: Take a trip to the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme, visit the wind turbines out at Tarago, go and see the construction of Australia’s largest SolarFarm at Royalla, visit the Botanic Gardens, The Arboretum, The National Zoo & Aquarium, Revolve, Tidbinbilla, The Cotter Dam, Googong Dam or the tip. Go apple picking atPialligo or wine stomping in Murrumbateman. Go camping, bush walking or bike riding. Look after a pet or take responsibility for someone or something. View the onlineversion of BTN ‘Behind The News’ to explore world issues that your child may be asking you about, such as the disappearance of the Malaysian Airlines plane or the recentinternational decision made on whaling.

How the World Works: create and make an invention that will solve a problem in your house hold using boxes, cardboard and recycled goods; Google 'Kitchen Science' andenjoy some age old experiments such as making the papier mâché volcano, filled with baking soda and vinegar, grow seeds on a window sill, place an onion in a glass ofwater, an egg in a jar of vinegar are fun for all age groups, make playdough, rake up some autumn leaves, visit Mt Stromlo Observatory, Questacon, the Arboretum, TheReptile Park, The National Dinosaur Museum, the limestone caves in Wee Jasper Carey’s Cave or the Canberra Space Centre. Record the times that the suns rises and sets, make moon observations and record these pictorially. Pitch a tent in the backyard to spend time staring at the stars.

How We Express Ourselves: Visit the Portrait Gallery, The National Gallery, Erindale Theatre, Canberra Theatre, the Movies, the National Sound and Film Archive, TheCanberra Glass works, the Carillion or the Bus Depot Markets. Go for a walk around New Acton to view the urban landscape and installations there. Have a look at the newKingston foreshore. Get the paints, oil pastels, crayons, textas and pencils out on the dining room table, even better, take them to the top of a mountain. Make masks out ofcardboard or clay. Create origami figures, attend Storytime at the National Library, write books, poems, journal entries, read, be read to, talk, dance, sing, move, create.

How We Organise Ourselves: Visit Old Parliament House – Democracy Museum, New Parliament House – House of Representatives and Senate, get your child to plan anentire trip to the movies – book tickets online, create a budget, look up timetables to travel using public transport and pack snacks. Plan a meal. Go grocery shopping with abudget. Build a city out of cardboard boxes. Go through old toys and books and organise what is no longer used. Plan a Garage Sale or better still a trip to Vinnies or theSalvation Army.

Print this list out and stick it on the fridge. And if you happen to hear the dreaded school holidays words ‘I’m bored!’, you’ll have an immediate place to turn to.We wish you a lovely time together with your sons and daughters these holidays. Stay safe.

Chad Birks
