Using this Catalog In this catalog you will find a list of professional development opportunities offered through PLI (Professional
Learning and Curriculum Innovation), CTS (Center for Teacher Support), and SPG (System for Professional
Growth). These courses are being offered to all teaching staff, and each course description includes the most
relevant SPG essential elements for practitioners engaged in that process.
Registration: Winter/Spring registration is now open. Registration will take place online through ERO. All
courses are offered on a first come, first served basis. Register here!
Face-to Face Sessions: In-person meetings offer the chance to collaborate in real-time. We offer a variety of
opportunities to learn and practice with your colleagues. Guidelines:

Book Studies: The book study courses use Schoology to allow participants to take part in discussions with
fellow participants. In order to register for a book study opportunity, please complete the following steps:
1. Register in ERO using the published SRN.
2. Log into your portal (portal.sanjuan.edu) and click on the Schoology tile.
3. In Schoology, click the “Courses” tab at the top and then click “Join”.
4. Contact the course facilitator if you have questions.
Book Study Guidelines:
Hours are earned based on weekly reading and responses to both the published discussion questions and
other participants’ posts.
Weeks begin on Monday and end on Sunday.
In order to receive hours for the week, you must meet the deadlines set by the facilitator. These will be
stated at the beginning of each book study.
Responses to discussion questions and participants’ posts should be thoughtful and detailed, including
evidence from the text, elaboration based on additional reading or personal experience, language that
builds on other responses, and/or follow-up questions.
Participants are required to purchase the book unless otherwise specified in the course description.

Center for Teacher Support (CTS)
Planning and Assessment Description: Take lesson planning to a whole new level. This training is designed to give an overview of the
Seven Strategies of Assessment for Learning. This PD is most helpful as 4 series course, however you can
attend any session as a stand-alone training. This session will provide an overview of the seven strategies of
assessment for learning with a focus on the four types of learning targets. Participants will practice converting
standards into student friendly language and learn strategies for communicating targets to students.

Target Audience: All
Outcomes: Teachers will know how to develop comprehensive unit plans with a variety of types of targets.
They will understand the importance of communicating targets to students and have comprehensive strategies
for doing this. They will have a variety of formative assessment strategies and will know how to use the
information garnered from them to adjust instruction and to help students set academic goals for their own
learning.
Dates: All Wednesdays in 2018: January 31, February 7, February 28, March 7
1/31/18 This session will provide an overview of the seven strategies of assessment for learning with a focus
on the four types of learning targets. Participants will practice converting standards into student friendly
language and learn strategies for communicating targets to students.
2/7/18 This session will focus on the various types of assessments: formative, summative and benchmark and
their purposes. Participants will get an overview of how to embed formative assessment into daily lessons and
develop strategies for giving students effective, actionable feedback based on those assessments.
2/28/18 This session will focus on teaching students to assess their own learning.
In addition participants will develop strategies to co-create rubrics with their students, use backwards mapping
to build unit plans and focus instruction on one target or academic skill at a time.
3/7/18 This final session gives some specific strategies to differentiate instruction based on student needs. We
will also provide some time for teachers to develop their own unit plans with various types of targets based on
the standards they are responsible for teaching.

Structured Academic Talk Across Content Areas Description: Participants will examine the critical role of oral language proficiency in school success for
English Language Learners and the need for maximized verbal engagement across the grade levels using the
elements of academic language that support literacy and learning English Language Development (ELD)
through explicit, structured and accountable responses. Participants will learn scaffolds that include interactive
structures that encourage discussion and active participation as well as visual and graphic scaffolds that help
create a safe place for ELs to participate across disciplines.
Outcomes: Teachers will understand why increased verbal engagement leads to success for English Language
Learners. Teachers will know how to include structures for ensuring that all students engage in discussion and
meaningful oral language interactions

Seven Strategies of Assessment for Learning 2nd Edition– Book Study
Description: How do you know what your students know? How do you decide what they need next? Read,
discuss, and implement formative assessment strategies. Use the data you generate to write prescriptive lesson
plans based on an accurate and in depth understanding of your students’ needs.
Outcomes: For participants to have a clear understanding of the book, Seven Strategies of Assessment for
Learning, organizes research-based recommendations about formative assessment practices into an instructional

Teach Like a Champion 2.0 – Book Study
Description: The book study will focus on strategies from the book Teach Like a Champion 2.0. There are 24
total hours possible for the course. Requirements for the class will be to have access to the book and the
Internet. There will be 2 hours per chapter (1 hour for the reading and 1 hour for answering prompts and
participating in threaded discussions in Schoology). Hours are only given for work completed (answering
prompt on Schoology). You may take this book study for hours even if you completed the Teach Like a
Champion Book Study previously. The book you will need for this class is Teach Like a Champion 2. ISBN:
978-1-118-90185-4. The course will be online using Schoology and is self-paced.
Outcomes: Teachers will learn a variety of easy-to-implement teaching strategies and techniques that will keep

Jo Boaler: “Mathematical Mindsets” Description: This is the follow-up course to Jo Boaler’s “How to Learn Math for Teachers”. This ten-week
interactive, online course includes six modules that support teachers to teach mathematics for a growth mindset
to students of any age (K-16). It shares the latest brain science on the ways students learn mathematics and
translates the science into teaching methods and approaches. It shares approximately 30 classroom videos of Dr.
Boaler teaching 6th and 7th graders 18 math lessons. The students improved their test achievement by an average
of 50% per student, which is equivalent to 1.6 years of school. For each module, participants may spend 1.5-3
hours viewing the videos, reflecting, and planning. Participants will meet as a whole group for one hour each
during Week 1 to review course logistics and Week 10 to complete the course. Modules may be completed
independently or preferably with collaborative teams.
