Reference QuenchProbe
Equipment for in-situDetermination of Cooling Characteristics ofQuenchants by Cooling Curve Analysis
Reference QuenchProbeis a result of research conducted at IIT Madras in the past 12 years. Six
research theses; four research projects; ten International Refereed Journal papers; eighteen International
and National Conference / Symposium / Workshop papers have been published so far, related to the
technology of Reference QuenchProbe.
Cylindrical alloy steelprobe (Same grade as component): For EXACTcooling rates with specific steel

Steel Heat Treatment Analysis (TmmFE)
Steel Heat Treatment Analysis (TmmFE) is Finite element software for simulating heat treatment process
and its metallurgical implications at virtual sensor locations considering steel properties and TTT diagram.
The mathematical model will be built based upon the customer specific steel and quenchant combination
to calculate temperature contours and metallurgical implications at different points of the componenthence giving the accurate results.
The TTT diagram and material properties of customer specific steel will be taken into account for the
analysis thereby increasing the accuracy of the output results.
Applications:
Steel Casting Heat Treatment
Steel Forging Heat Treatment
Heat Treatment of machined components
Benefits:
Cooling Rate Curves at different locations
Compute Microstructure variation at different locations
Estimate the Hardness at different locations
Simulation of Temperature contour for complete heat
treatment process from heating to quenching Transferring time data is also considered for calculations
Simulate actual component virtually before conducting
the manufacturing process, thereby saving cost of
destructive testing

ASTM QuenchProbe
Equipment for Standard Tests for the Determination of Cooling
Characteristics of Quenchants by Cooling Curve Analysis as per ASTM
D6200-01(For Quench Oils) and as per ASTM D6482-06(For Aqueous
Polymer Quenchants with Agitation)
Applications: Measurement of quenching capacity of different quenching
mediums (oils, polymer solutions etc) as per ASTM D6200-01 for
ease of comparison of data worldwide
Selection of proper quenchant based on comparison of different
quenchants
Check the health of quenchants with continued use
Check the effect of agitation on cooling rates
Check the effect of contamination in quenchants (water in oil;
polymer in oil etc.)
Inspection of quenchants in as-received condition
InverseSOLVER
InverseSOLVER is based on a serial algorithm for the
Inverse Heat Conduction Problem (IHCP) developed
to estimate the individual flux components at the
unknown boundary. In many practical problems the
surface conditions are not known a-prior. In such
cases the surface conditions will have to be
estimated under simulated or laboratory
conditions.
Applications:
Estimation of heat flux on the heat shields during re-entry of space vehicles for the Indian Space Research
Estimation of space and time varying multiple heat flux components at the metal-mold interface during net
shape casting of continuous casting of steel, for a consortium of steel companies
Estimation of space and time varying multiple heat flux components (six components along the mold wall) at
the metal-mold interface during continuous casting of thin steel slabs and filling in aluminum die casting
Estimation of metal-mold interface heat flux during die casting of cast iron moulds for a leading foundry
Estimation of heat flux due to the welding arc during TIG welding
Estimation of heat flux during quenching of steel specimens
Estimation of heat flux at the metal-mold interface corners of solidifying aluminum bars and slabs
Estimation of heat flux on the plasma facing components in the Tokomak.
