PSD School Ministries Connections
June 28, 2017
"You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord
and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet."
John 13:13-14
Jesus' words in John 13 emphasize service to one another in the family of God
AND service to our communities and the world! It's evangelism, outreach and
witness, AND discipleship and spiritual nurture! It's a both/and, not an either/or.
We are cleansed through Jesus' death on the cross. Week by week, we must
remind one another of that as we gather to to be served - and to serve with the
authentic love of Christ!

Friday, June 30. Please send final contributions this week. The current total is:
$30,034.39. Thank you to all who contributed so generously! We exceeded our
goal by over $5,000.00!
The Pacific Southwest District Hearts for Jesus project for 2017-2018 will be
Lutheran Special Education Ministries (LSEM). The theme of the project is
Fearfully and Wonderfully Made, inspired by Psalm 139:14 which states, "I praise
you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I
know that full well."
Please consider designating the month of February or
third quarter as your Hearts for Jesus chapel offering
recipient. More information about the project will be
available in the near future.

Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Trinity Lutheran
On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that the state of Missouri violated
the U.S. Constitution when it excluded a preschool sponsored by Trinity Lutheran
Church of Columbia from a state grant program providing playground resurfacing
materials.
"[T]he exclusion of Trinity Lutheran from a public benefit for which it is otherwise
qualified, solely because it is a church, is odious to our Constitution," said the
court.
Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the opinion of the court and was joined by
Justices Kennedy, Alito, Kagan, Thomas, and Gorsuch, except that three justices
(Roberts, Thomas, and Gorsuch) refused to endorse a particular footnote limiting
the scope of the ruling. Justice Breyer filed an opinion concurring in the
judgment. Justice Sotomayor filed a dissenting opinion, in which Justice Ginsburg
joined.
Here is more information about the footnote from Dr. Ron Reynolds, Executive
Director of CAPSO (California Association of Private School Organizations):
It appears that the scope of applicability of the Supreme Court's decision in Trinity
Lutheran... is going to turn upon the interpretation of footnote 3 of Justice
Roberts' opinion, which reads as follows:
"This case involves express discrimination based on religious identity with respect
to playground resurfacing. We do not address religious uses of funding or other
forms of discrimination."
Both Justices Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch joined Justice Roberts' opinion,
with the express exception of footnote 3. In his concurring opinion, Justice
Gorsuch writes:
"I am unable to join the footnoted observation, ante, at 14, n. 3, that '[t]his case
involves express discrimination based on religious identity with respect to
playground resurfacing.' Of course the footnote is entirely correct, but I worry that
some might mistakenly read it to suggest that only 'playground resurfacing' cases,
or only those with some association with children's safety or health, or perhaps
some other social good we find sufficiently worthy, are governed by the legal rules
recounted in and faithfully applied by the Court's opinion. Such a reading would
be unreasonable for our cases are 'governed by general principles, rather than ad
hoc improvisations.' Elk Grove Unified School Dist. v. Newdow, 542 U. S. 1, 25 (2004)
(Rehnquist, C. J., concurring in judgment). And the general principles here do not
permit discrimination against religious exercise-whether on the playground or
anywhere else."
Visit the CAPE (Council for American Private Education) website for a link to the full
ruling.

New Calls/Leaving Calls Commissioned Ministers, when you take a new Call or peacefully leave your
current Call, there is paperwork that needs to be completed to keep your Roster
status with the LCMS current.
If you are taking a new Call, it is your responsibility to send page 13 of your
Call document here to the District Office to begin the process of
reassigning you to your new congregation.
If you are leaving your current Call with a peaceful release and not taking a
new Call, please contact our offices for the forms to complete for
Inactive/Candidate status.
This is important even if you won't be considering a new Call in the immediate
future. Please don't neglect this! If you have questions on your paperwork, please
contact Ellen Pratt in our office on Mondays or Tuesdays. Thank you!
