Dharna & its Objectives:• Non violent sit-in process• Anti Government Protest• Demand of justice• State response of criminal cases.• Payment of a debt.• Some are against & some are in favour of sit-in. William Faulkner

is in favour of sit-in. He says that “………………………………….”.• Its obvious that silence gives straight to the authority.• It is the duty of youth to challenge corruption.

Dharna in Pakistan• Protest Against Ayub Khan Govt. On 7 November 1968, police fired at a student rally in

Rawalpindi, which resulted in the deaths of three students and fired up the protests against the government.• Another very important opposition movement was organized in 1977

by the Pakistan National Alliance (PNA) against the then prime minister, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.• Next in line was the movement against Zia ul Haq’s dictatorship.

Formed in 1981, the Movement for Restoration of Democracy (MRD) was an alliance of certain left-wing political parties that called for an end to the dictatorship of Zia ul Haq.• In 1992, the late Benazir Bhutto announced a long march against the

government of Nawaz Sharif, levelling allegations of corruption and also dubbing the 1990 elections “rigged”. Paricipated politicians are Qazi Hussain Ahmad, Nawabzada Nasrullah Khan and Muhammad Khan Junejo.

• Benazir threatened to march towards Islamabad with thousands of supporters again in 1993.  By this time, corruption of the Sharif government was criticized in many circles.• In 2008, the lawyers’ community took to the streets when General Musharraf

deposed the Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and sixty other judges. The long march of 2008 was mainly a display of activism by the civil society.• In 2009, a second long march was announced during the government of Asif Ali

Zardari for the same purpose, however this time Nawaz Sharif decided to lead the march from Lahore.• And Finally Imran khan & Qadri arrange Container Dharna against the govt. starts

from Lahore to Islamabad on august 14 2014

Dharna in Pakistan

Effect of Dharna on Pakistan’s Economy

• By 31 august, the govt. claimed economic losses directly resulting from the sit-in were between Rs500 million & Rs800 million.• On 26 September, an adviser to PM claimed the losses had run

up to $6 billion (RS610 Billion).• According to some source the economic losses exceed to 1000

billion rupees.• 1 billion rupees spent on sit-in security.• It made considerable noise about the dharna being an

unconstitutional or illegal step.• In fact one does not have a correct estimate of the economic

losses to the state.

Effect of Dharna on Pakistan’s Economy

• China, Turkey, Saudi Arabia are giving economic help to Pakistan. It is not bearable for the enemies of our country and they are orginising such protests.• They are aware of that situation that if 2 or 3 lakh people protest

on the road it would ruin the whole economic system of Pakistan.• People are depress and frustrated over that situation and they

have become hopeless victim. It leads them towards suicide and un employment.• The govt. accused the dharna organizer of causing huge losses to

the state especially by creating a situation that prevented the Chinese President from coming to Pakistan and scared other investors away.
